The Winnipeg Jets were putting their undefeated record in the second half of back-to-back game situations on the line against the Vancouver Canucks last night. Unfortunately, the team played what head coach Rick Bowness said was “the worst game they played in two years”, so they easily fell to a much more motivated Canucks squad.

Since I am sort of a stats guy, I am aware that when you are analyzing a data set that has one or two extreme outliers, you will typically get better results in your review if you completely remove these “unusual” outcomes. Therefore, I am going to treat last night’s awful performance in Vancouver as a freak incident and just turn my focus to completing my article about the Jets’ new acquisitions (Tyler Toffoli & Colin Miller).

However, I will post the advanced stats and shot charts from MoneyPuck to provide a visual record of the Canucks’ dismantling of our squad. Read on if you dare….

After One Period MoneyPuck Stats:  Score: 3 to 0 for the Canucks, shots 21 to 9 for the Canucks, 72.5% Deserve to Win for the Canucks, Expected Goals – all situations (1.98-0.84 VAN) & 5 on 5 (1.98-0.84 VAN)

After Two Periods MoneyPuck Stats:  Score: 4 to 0 for the Canucks, shots 29 to 14 for the Canucks, 81% Deserve to Win for the Canucks, Expected Goals – all situations (3.34-1.57 VAN) & 5 on 5 (2.64-1.57 VAN)

After Three Periods MoneyPuck Stats:  77% Deserve to Win for the Canucks, Expected Goals – all situations (3.82-1.95 VAN) & 5 on 5 (3.13-1.92 VAN)

FINAL SCORE:  VANCOUVER CANUCKS  5 WINNIPEG JETS  0

SHOTS: VANCOUVER CANUCKS  37 WINNIPEG JETS  22

Game Observations:

  • Looks like the coaching staff tried almost every combination of forwards last night. Here were the trios that actually played well together.
  • Connor Hellebuyck wasn’t on the top of his form, letting in the most goals against this year on way to a -1.18 Goals Saved Above Average. Bucky did stop 4 out of 5 high danger chances, but he had more difficulty with medium danger chances (7 of 10 saved).

NEXT GAME:  Washington Capitals @ Winnipeg Jets – Monday, March 11th @ 6:30 pm Central

I hope to have the article looking at what Toffoli and Miller will bring to the Winnipeg Jets sometime this evening. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
