Drafted in the third round, 71st overall, of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens, Plekanec has 608 points (233G, 375A) in 1001 games, as well as 53 points (18G, 35A) in 94 playoff games, for Montreal (2003/04-partway through 2017/18, part of 2018/19), and Toronto (part of 2017/18). In his career, he achieved career-highs of 70 points and 45 assists in 2010 and 29 goals in 2008. Plekanec, 36, has seen a steady decline leading to his retirement. After a bounceback to 60 points in 2015 and 54 the following season, Plekanec failed to reach the 30-point mark in both of the last two seasons. Plekanec’s TOI fell from 16:17 to 11:03 after his February 2018 trade to Toronto. He rejoined the Canadiens for this season with only two games to go for his 1000th NHL regular season game, but was a healthy scratch for the first three games of the season. Plekanec played in only three games before being sidelined with a back injury. Though he’s recovered, the Canadiens have opted to part ways, placing him on unconditional waivers. Plekanec leaves having finished his last season with one point (1G, 0A) in three games. Though he is retired from the NHL, Plekanec intends to finish his professional career in his native Czechia. It’s time as well to bid farewell to his iconic turtleneck.
