AIH 20416 Ep. 26: Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins and the NWHL’s New York Riveters

Hello everyone! Recorded on March 6th, the beginning to Episode 26 included a fair amount of Winnipeg Jets talk (weird, right?). But if there's one takeaway from our prologue, it's this: we're having a Twitter promotion!

As you’ve probably heard, there will be a special alumni game as part of the 2016 Bridgestone Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic festivities. We want you to tweet us at @AIH20416 with which players you’d like to see playing for Winnipeg in that alumni matchup between the Jets and Oilers. Try and avoid both the most obvious, and the complete joke suggestions. Our prize: we’ll read your tweets on air (maybe)!

We were first joined by Les Mavus, writer with SB Nation's Matchsticks & Gasoline. We knew he was repeat guest material the moment he accepted how Vancouver being evil is a given. The sad state of Calgary's goaltending, last year's success as an aberration, whether to describe the Kris Russell trade as highway robbery or grand larceny and having nude pictures of Jim Benning were all topics touched upon. Alan also asked the Michael Frolik question, because of course we had to ask about Michael Frolik.

Our next guest was Breanne Mellen, co-host of Mommy's Little Trash Cast, editor/writer with Arctic Ice Hockey and all round bane of my existence. After having my video game purchasing habits outed, we allowed Bree to express her excitement over the Boston Bruins being trade deadline buyers. Our conversation included lamenting Kevan Miller's existence, Alex Khokhlachev's NHL future, Zac Rinaldo realizing he's Zac Rinaldo, being pro-Tyler Myers' beautiful face because he's tall and gorgeous and a monster, and more (topics, not reasons for liking Tyler Myers)!

Last but certainly not least, Blueshirt Banter editor/writer Beth Boyle Machlan joined us for some NWHL and New York Riveters talk. Beth was kind enough to give both ourselves and our listeners a brief overview of the league's beginnings, in addition to some of the team dynamics at play. From there we discussed the progress made during a difficult season for New York, the attraction internationally of the NWHL, the Riveters' MVP, what the NWHL did right and what needs to improve heading into next season, how fanblog networks such as SB Nation can help further the cause of women's hockey and of course some Isobel Cup Final predictions.

Our epilogue was a bittersweet affair, as we spoke about embracing the tank following Winnipeg's 2-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers and began to dread the coming Mark Scheifele contract negotiations. Come and listen to our angst!
