Winnipeg Jets Top 25 Under 25 - #14 - Scott Kosmachuk

John E. Sokolowski-USA TODAY Spo

We look at the top 25 players under the age of 25 in the Winnipeg Jets organization, as voted by the authors of Arctic Ice Hockey.

On the day of the 2013 draft, some were taken aback by the selection of Lukas Sutter at second round, feeling he was more of a third round talent player. This author, however, told many to relax and not worry, as the Winnipeg Jets had selected a second round talent in the third with Scott Kosmachuk.

Depending on your views of Jimmy Lodge, who is a natural centre playing wing, Scott Kosmachuk is our first natural right wing player in our top 25 under 25.

Moar goals; moar scoring

In 2010-11 Scott Kosmachuk played all 68 games as a 16 year old rookie, which is pretty impressive. What's even more impressive is that he's only missed one OHL game in three whole seasons. Scott came in eleventh for U18 total points and his production per game was fifteenth.

Next season was Kosmachuk's draft year. He picked up his point pace a decent amount but the big jump was in his goalscoring. Only three draft eligible OHL players scored more than 30 goals, Nail Yakupov, Scott Kosmachuk and Seth Griffith. Of all the U18 OHL players, only 2013 draft class Sean Monahan and Kerby Rychel had more goals.

In his Draft+1 year, Scott struggled to find consistency. Kosmachuk's season was very hot and cold, although he did end up leading his teams in goals. For example, he once went seven games without scoring, followed by six goals in three games, and then went eight games without scoring again. He did however improve his goals by five and his points by six with only one additional game.

Scott Kosmachuk versus Tanner Richard

It will be very interesting to follow the development and potential future careers between these two players. They both played for Guelph Storm and were selected within one pick of each other. Tanner Richard however is a playmaker and over a point per game production player although he has a late birthday. A lot of Kosmachuk's production came from either Richard or Zach Mitchell. With Richard in the AHL, it will be fun to watch how things change for the two and who was driving the bus.

One more year to win the scoring title

Scott Kosmachuk has been sent back to Guelph for another season and to take a run at the OHL goal scoring title. It is highly unlikely that he will be returning for an overage season, so look for Kosmachuk to honing his game at St John's in the 2014-15 season.

Kosmachuk upside consists anywhere between 2nd line winger to depth forward and he has a long way to go. There was a time where he was the undisputed top right wing prospect for the Jets, but with the 2013 draft comes J.C Lipon and possibly Jimmy Lodge as well. Scott is loved by Arctic Ice Hockey for his drive to the net and hunger to score; he's been a long time favourite mid-pick prospect of this author and very fun to watch.
