October Winnipeg Jets Prospect Tracker: NCAA Edition

Justin K. Aller

New year and a new set of prospects to track in the NCAA: Jordan Samuels-Thomas, Tanner Lane, Peter Stoykewych, Brennan Serville, Jason Kasdorf, Aaron Harstad, Connor Hellebuyck, Jamie Phillips, Andrew Copp, and Tucker Poolman.

Once a month we'll look at how the Winnipeg Jets prospects are doing.

2009 7th Round: LW Jordan Samuels-Thomas; 7GP, 3G, 3A, 6PTS, +2, 10PIM, 24SOG

Year Rel Draft Level G/GP A/GP Pts/GP
2013-14 5 NCAA 0.429 0.429 0.857
2012-13 4 NCAA 0.395 0.279 0.674
2011-12 3 - - - -
2010-11 2 NCAA 0.250 0.333 0.694
2009-10 1 NCAA 0.314 0.400 0.714
2008-09 0 USHL 0.542 0.373 0.915

Samuels-Thomas is the returning lead goal scorer for Quinnipiac and the eldest non-pro level Jets prospect. Currently he is tied for lead in shots on goal and tied for second in goals. Two of his goals have come on the power play, while all three of his assists have been primary ones. Quinnipiac has had a strong start this season, going 6-1-0 and have outshot opponents 220-134 (62% SF%). For those who do not know, Samuels-Thomas missed a year due to transfer rules when he changed schools from Bowling Green to Quinnipiac, so he was eligible to play this season and has taken it.

2010 6th Round: C Tanner Lane; 3GP, 1G, 0A, 1PT, +1, 0PIM

Year Rel Draft Level G/GP A/GP Pts/GP
2013-14 4 NCAA 0.333 0.000 0.333
2012-13 3 NCAA 0.065 0.129 0.194
2011-12 2 USHL 0.217 0.467 0.683
2010-11 1 USHL 0.070 0.158 0.228
2009-10 0 USHS 1.190 1.143 2.333

Lane has never quite returned the dominate force he was in US High School in his draft year, although he did have a decent final year in the USHL. Even as a sophomore Lane is having trouble being a regular on the team, being in and out of the pressbox. Currently Lane has played only three of six games. He accumulated 0, 1 and 2 shots in each respectively, scoring a goal in his third game.

2010 7th Round: LD Peter Stoykewych; 4GP, 0G, 0A, 0PTS, 4PIM

Year Rel Draft Level G/GP A/GP Pts/GP
2013-14 4 NCAA 0.000 0.000 0.000
2012-13 3 NCAA 0.048 0.214 0.262
2011-12 2 NCAA 0.000 0.115 0.115
2010-11 1 USHL 0.086 0.172 0.259
2009-10 0 MJHL 0.107 0.446 0.554

Stoykewych is a large mobile puck moving defensemen. He's seen increased responsibilities both in ice time and in leadership, with being one of the team's assistant captains. Stoykewych has yet to post a point but that won't stay that way for long. Colorado has struggled out the gate, with a 1-3-0 record and being outshot 76-148.

2011 3rd Round: RD Brennan Serville; 6GP, 0G, 0A, 0PTS, 4PIM

Year Rel Draft Level G/GP A/GP Pts/GP
2013-14 3 NCAA 0.000 0.000 0.000
2012-13 2 NCAA 0.034 0.069 0.103
2011-12 1 NCAA 0.000 0.235 0.235
2010-11 0 OJHL 0.083 0.750 0.833

Well that points per game trend isn't promising...

With both John Merrill and Jacob Trouba gone, I was hoping to see some increased minutes for Serville in his third year, but looks as though he will be staying on the second pair for now. Serville has a reputation for being solid defensively, but he's going to need a lot more than that if he's going to make any noise in the Jets very deep right handed defensemen depth charts and earn a contract.

2011 6th Round: G Jason Kasdorf; 2 GP, 34 SA, 0.786 SV%

Year Rel Draft Level GP SA SV%
2013-14 3 NCAA 2 34 0.786
2012-13 2 NCAA 23 593 0.935
2011-12 1 USHL 33 943 0.894
2010-11 0 MJHL 34
0.912

Kasdorf posted a shutout in his first start of the season, but had an unfortunate second game letting in 6 goals out of 15 shots before being pulled. Kasdorf came into the season looking to be the undisputed starter for RPI, but a shoulder injury has taken him out for a while now and there is speculation it could be for a while. RPI has since gone 3-0 after Kadorf's injury doesn't help his case.

2011 7th Round: LD Aaron Harstad; 4GP, 0G, 1A, 4PIM

Year Rel Draft Level G/GP A/GP Pts/GP
2013-14 3 NCAA 0.000 0.250 0.250
2012-13 2 NCAA 0.065 0.129 0.194
2011-12 1 NCAA 0.000 0.207 0.207
2010-11 0 USHL 0.137 0.275 0.412

Harstad is another Jets left handed defensmen and junior at Colorado College; however, Stoykewych and Harstad are very stylistically different. While Stoykewych is more of a puck mover excelling in the transition game, Harstad is more of a gap control, positional defensive defensemen. Harstad does have a decently powerful shot, so it will be interesting to see these two compete in their point totals and on the Jets prospects depth charts.

2012 5th Round: G Connor Hellebuyck; 4 GP, 114 SA, 0.939 SV%

Year Rel Draft Level GP SA SV%
2012-13 2 NCAA 4 114 0.939
2011-12 1 NCAA 24 661 0.952
2010-11 0 USHL 53 1823 0.930

Other than one game, Hellebuyck has picked up where he left off last season. In his four games, he's allowed 2, 3, 1, and 1 goal against. UMass has a 3-3-0 record with some early season struggles after coming in ranked number one. If Hellebuyck can sustain these numbers throughout his NCAA career, the Jets could very well have that above average starter they've been hoping for all this while.

2012 7th Round: G Jamie Philips; 2 GP, 55 SA, 0.855

Year Rel Draft Level GP SA SV%
2013-14 2 NCAA 2 55 0.855
2012-13 1 NCAA 9 140 0.907
2011-12 0 BCHL 26 609 0.921

OJHL 11
0.917

Phillips has only started for two games. The first game was a strong performance where he stopped 21 of 22 shots. The next one however turned a bit more into a gong show, where he only stopped 26 of 33 shots. Michigan went 0-1-1 with Phillips in the net, so he may have lost the starting job to Phoenix Copley, a fellow sophomore. Although, Michigan is 1-3-0 with Copley, so anything could happen.

2013 4th Round: C Andrew Copp; 6GP, 2G, 4A, 6PTS, +0, 2PIM

Year Rel Draft Level G/GP A/GP Pts/GP
2013-14 2 NCAA 0.333 0.667 1.000
2012-13 1 NCAA 0.289 0.263 0.553
2011-12 0 USHL 0.167 0.389 0.556

Copp was drafted in his second year of eligibility, so although this is his first year after being drafted, we will still gauge him as a player who was drafted at his time of eligibility.

Copp had a very strong first 3 games, scoring all six of his points during that stand; however, he has been a blank since. Michigan has a lot of good players with high pedigree in its forward corps, so Copp holding the 1C position is a pretty big deal. Copp is relatively new to concentrating on hockey exclusively as his #1 sport and rode on quite the hot streak for the second half of last season. He will be one to watch for sure.

2013 5th Round: RD Tucker Poolman; 10 GP, 3G, 3A, +6, 4PIM

Year Rel Draft Level G/GP A/GP Pts/GP
2013-14 1 USHL 0.300 0.300 0.600
2012-13 0 USHL 0.219 0.219 0.438

Poolman is not in the NCAA, but the USHL. He is commited to the University of North Dakota next season so we'll lump him in with the rest.

There were some concerns last season that Poolman's production may have been inflated by lucky power play percentages, since 19 of Poolman's 28 points were on the power play. However, Poolman is pacing even stronger this season. He does once again have a large PP:ES production, with one goal and two assists coming from the power play. His 20% shooting percentage will come down in time and there may be some concerns that his 1.7 shots per game has fallen to 1.5, but small sample sizes anyways.
