Altitude Check: Thursday February 2, 2012 Winnipeg Jets Headlines
Hey all! Here is our feature running Monday through Friday that will bring you up to date on what's going on in the media pertaining to the Winnipeg Jets.
Here are your headlines for Thursday, February 2, 2012:

Our SB Nation pals at Raw Charge offer more from a Lightning perspective. [Raw Charge]
Good news everyone! Dustin Byfuglien and Alexander Burmistrov should be back in action soon: "Officially, whether the two players return Thursday against the Tampa Lightning will be a "game-time decision," according to head coach Claude Noel, but both men have practiced fully with the team for the last two days and declared themselves good to go after Wednesday’s session at the Tampa Bay Times Forum." [WFP]
As previously celebrated here at Artcic Ice Hockey, Chris Thorburn scored his first goal of the year which only took him fifty games to produce (next Thorburn goal expected in 2012 playoffs, should the Jets qualify). How does the Jets pugilist feel about lighting the lamp? "Yeah, it’s a sense of relief but at the same time it gives me the confidence to know I can do it. I can get a good shot away and give myself a chance to score. It’s like I haven’t been getting chances. I just haven’t been able to find the back of the net. Hopefully this starts something good." The Chris Thorburn Rule is now in effect as the Jets are undefeated when he scores. This is similar to the Corey Perry Rule which goes into effect when Canada plays in the Olympics. [Winnipeg Sun]
Dustin Byfuglien is seeking a lesser charge for this summer's boating incident in Minnesota. [CBC]
Winnipeg is one of the top 15 teams in per-game revenue in this, their inaugural year. "Despite playing in the league's smallest venue, the Jets have played to 100 per cent capacity and rank 25th in official league attendance, ahead of Columbus, Anaheim, Dallas, the New York Islanders and Phoenix. As well, the Jets are apparently ranked No. 2 in merchandise sales among all NHL teams while all of the suites at MTS Centre are sold out for the next few years." [WFP]
Urgh, this trade proposal makes my brain hurt: "To Winnipeg: F Jeff Carter, F Kristian Huselius To Columbus: F Nik Antropov, D Ron Hainsey, D Zach Redmond". Yeah, that's not happening. Ever. [Our Hometown]
Keith Tkachuk can relate to the bad press that Evander Kane has been receiving. [Canoe]

This question has nothing to do with the Jets or this post.
But does anybody else think that Kyle Brodziak might be one of the best value pickups of any player who is about to hit the market as a UFA this off season?
that depends
If UFA inflation has taught us anything it’s that even superstar signings have a ripple effect down the line (2011 Richards, Ryder, Ward, Pouliot). I mean hell, Colby Armstrong raked in 9MM over 3 yr on the market so I can see someone paying upwards to 2.5MM on Broadziak if he continues to eclipse career goal totals.
The installment of the CBA has been positive for the game, but it still can’t save GMs from themselves.
Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos!

2.5 wouldn't be bad for a guy who could be a 2nd line centre on a lot of teams...
…Including ours…
Free agency will be interesting this year. It isn’t exactly flush with talent, but I think there are a number of centres and wingers who will be in higher demand than Kyle. He just isn’t a sexy / flashy pick up.
Even if he gets signed for around $3 mill / yr it wouldn’t be too out of line IMO. He wins face offs and he has developed into a solid two way player throughout his career. Plus it looks like he can pot 15 – 20 goals in the right situation.
I am not one of those people who can’t stand Antropov, but I wouldn’t mind seeing somebody boot him out to the wing next season.
all valid points
addition of Brodziak wouldn’t necessairly need to corrolate w/ departure of Antropov. They could slot him as a 3rd line C which would better tailor his game rather than the #2C.
Having said that, it will all depend on how RFA/UFA re-signings shake out here in Winnipeg. There’s a good chance that MIN will re-up him as well.

I'd rather see Antropov moved to the wing.
I don’t have a huge issue with him being on the second line.
my issue with Antropov at wing is foot-speed
I’m not a fan of him covering the points defensively, and his foot speed would be exposed (moreso) moving him to the wing. Plus I think it hurts his overall distribution of the puck.

I suppose it works both ways.
His foot speed hurts him just the same when he has to check his man as a centre. Him not making it back has been a issue more than a handful of times. He is still an effective player, I just want a better face off man taking draws.
Foot speed is far more of a concern at Center
Theres more ice covered as a center. Burmistrov needs to work on his face-offs and be moved back to center next year.
He's on pace for 70 pts
His previous best was 37.
Based on that I think someone’s going to overpay for him.
By my calulations he is on pace for 44 points and 22 goals.
That my be enough to cause an over spend, but I see players like Semin, Parise, Kostitsyn, Ruutu, Jokinen, Hedjuk, Grabovski, Hudler, Kelly and probably Penner drawing more attention.
Then again I could see the craziness reaching the likes of Stempniak, Parenteau & Brodziak
Yes and no, 20 goal scorers were gobbled up last year.
It will be interesting to see where his value is. Brodziak and Penner will be fun ones to watch.
Since I used to follow the Oilers pretty closely I'm familiar with both of those
Both were well liked in the oiler blogs.
Brodziak = Slater with a bit more offense.
Penner = Antropov. Big slow guy who will puts up steady points but the fans hate because “he doesn’t look like he tries hard enough”
Both are effective players too.
I am really curious to see what kind of offers Penner gets. There is a lot of talk about how he is over paid. His lack of production has been a frequent topic of discussion. I wonder if / how much his value has dropped to GMs around the league.
Just looking at Brodziak's #'s
The comparision to Slater is pretty reasonable. Very similar 5v5 scoring over the last 3 years. Brodziak’s extra points come from PP time that Slater doesn’t get. Both get lots of D zone work. Both good face off men.
I think more than $2 mill / yr would be an overpay.
If they could nab him that cheap, I think that would be great value.
I don’t know if I’d say their ES offensive production is the same.
Brodziak has consistently put up about 50% more offence at ES (albeit with a few more minutes the last couple seasons) and aside from this year PP points weren’t a big part of his totals.
His numbers are almost identical to those of Antropov over the last two season. I am not sure that is a good thing.
No Surprise

“Winnipeg is one of the top 15 teams in per-game revenue in this, their inaugural year.”
That doesn’t surprise me at all.
I remember telling my friends in Minneapolis that Winnipeg would become a top revenue generating franchises in the league even though they play in a smaller building. I explained that it’s better for the team’s pocketbook playing in sold out building of 15,000 than an empty barn like those in Atlanta and Phoenix that seat 20,000.
What’s great to see is that they have another 4 season of sold out hockey and the team is fighting for a playoff spot.
