Altitude Check: Wednesday February 1, 2012 Winnipeg Jets Headlines
Hey all! Here is our feature running Monday through Friday that will bring you up to date on what's going on in the media pertaining to the Winnipeg Jets.
Here are your headlines for Wednesday, February 1, 2012:
Ed Tait on Winnipeg's victory in Philadelphia: "This isn’t an easy town for anybody in enemy colours, be they Giants or Cardinals, Celtics or Penguins, Apollo Creed or Santa Claus. And so when a visitor can escape with a victory — as the Winnipeg Jets did Tuesday night courtesy a 2-1 shootout over the Philadelphia Flyers — then it’s cause for a little celebration, short-lived as it may be." Up to date NHL Conference Standings. Don't look now but Tampa Bay is getting hot in the Southeast! [NHL.com]
Gary Lawless pens article "Jets Fans Love Big Buff" in which little is discussed on how fans perceive Byfuglien but rather his Lawless' opinions on Byfugilen's summer transgressions with the law and his commitment to a fitness regiment: "There's no question he's an all-star, but Byfuglien could be elite. One of the game's top five defencemen -- mentioned in the same breath as Shea Weber and Zdeno Chara. Not, however, unless he discovers a way to reach a higher level of fitness. Elite doesn't happen for players in so-so shape. Byfuglien can't be too gassed to get back in the play after a rush and he can't use game action as his conditioning regime. He needs to commit to an off-ice program that takes his game to that next level." Zing. [WFP]
Evander Kane has been silenced on Twitter by the Jets amid rumors and speculation of his off-ice lifestyle. [Winnipeg Sun]
The Winnipeg Jets really need more Cam Charron's writing for them. His take on the Trade Deadline: "Cheveldayoff isn't the type to string together a bunch of assets to lure Shea Weber to Winnipeg for a few months. His quotes from the story sound like something right out of Moneyball, and Billy Beane's second rule on making trades: "The day you say you have to do something, you're screwed. Because you are going to make a bad deal." " Spot on, right there. Arctic Ice Hockey will have a ton of juicy trade deadline items for you including a Trade Deadline Day Live Chat. [Jets Nation]
Winnipeg Jets prospect Mark Scheifele has posted 7 points (4G, 3A) in 10 games this January since returning to Barrie after winning bronze at the World Junior Hockey Championships. [OHL]
Finally, Justin Bourne argues the inconsistency of real-time stats. [Backhand Shelf]

I hate you for making me give a page hit to Paul Friesen.
At least warn us. Friesen just wants to stir shit up. Its his job as tabloid writer- if there’s no controversy, simply take a little issue and blow it up so enough people see it.

haha
it’s a game of Russian Roulette so anything Sun related always has a 1 out of 3 chance of being written by Friesen!

And more Kane coverage...
From Puck Daddy. Disheartening to see an article like that. PD’s work is usually very good, but when you’re using Gary Lawless and Scott Taylor (“who’s covered hockey in Winnipeg since 1976”) as your resources, the article holds as much weight if it came from a dog. Taylor also claims Kane requested a trade and I’m not sure that was ever verified.
To cap it all off, a hearty LOL at Puck Daddy mentioning race and describing Kane as an “African-Canadian.” Never really understood why Americans have to end all nationalities as ______-American, up here we generally refer to them as “black,” and no that is not seen as offensive.

re: Puck Daddy/Kane
I too found the Editors Note distasteful.

Yeah, I read this awhile ago
Wysh should know better than to bring up race because a.) the racism’s a bit different, and b.) the Yahoo comments section is where the scum of the earth resides.
I don’t really think the issue is as much about Kane’s race (they didn’t completely bail on Byfuglien through his incident) as it is about these incredibly lofty moral standards for athletes. If people scrutinized me in my early 20s to the level that they do Kane, I’d be run out of town.

nailed it.
Everyone thinks that every spare moment should be spent kissing babies and volunteering for charities which is truly not the case. He’s a 20 y/o kid with a chip on his shoulder and he’s hardly the only one in the NHL.
Mark Chipman is loyal to a fault but he’s also a no-nonsense kind of guy. Fans need to be acceptant that if there is anything going on w/ Kane, it will be dealt with internally and to the satisfaction of TNSE. To make up falsified reports does no good.
Also for Friesen and Lawless to add fuel to the fire for writing articles about a non story (honestly, you’re letting a handful of fans dictate what you write!?) hurts Kane more than it helps him.

I'm just glad Scott Taylor wasn't referred to as a journalist
Because guys who get fired by the WFP because of plagiarism are not journalists. He spends his spare time ripping on the WFP and creating stupid rumors. He’s not a good source of information.
And playing the race card was shockingly distasteful. He’s a 20 year old kid with a big ego under the microscope of a hockey mad city. That’s about it

The _-American thing happened in the USA because black people went from “Say it loud! I’m black and I’m proud!” to deciding that the ONLY way to be was to emphasize their “Africanness”, whatever on earth that was. And of course it overlooks the fact that millions of non-black people are also African by birth. Here in the US the common person can still get by with saying “black” and nobody freaks out, but the media simply will not use that term and resorts to _-American to avoid offending anyone. Sorry but it looks like a bad US habit made its way north.
Its ridiculous.
I read a smoking cessation article for school and they separated their demographics into: African-American, Hispanic-American, Caucasian-American, and a few others. It was arguably the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen in a scientific article.

I don't entirely disagree with the intentions behind it
But it’s a whole different thing to assume that race handled the same way in Canada as it is in the U.S.
