HockeyFights.com Best Fights of the Half-Season

PITTSBURGH - OCTOBER 13: Deryk Engelland #5 of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Colton Orr #28 of the Toronto Maple Leafs exchange punches during a first period fight that resulted in Orr leaving the game on October 13 2010 at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. This post was actually prompted by a conversation I had at a New Year's party:

Random person: "You know how you start watching a youtube video and you just get side-tracked and end up watching a whole bunch of unrelated stuff?" (Everyone except me nods.)

Me: "Not really. I start watching a video of a hockey fight and I just end up watching a couple dozen of them."

And there's no better place to watch hockey fights than over at HockeyFights.com.  Here are the eight fights that cracked an 8.0 fan rating since the beginning of the season:

1. 9.4 score - Eric Boulton vs John Erskine, Nov 14 - 51 seconds

2. 8.7 score - Krys Barch vs Cam Janssen, Jan 2 - 73 seconds

3. 8.4 score - Jarome Iginla vs Jamie Benn, Dec 23 - 65 seconds

4. 8.4 score - Steve MacIntyre vs Raitis Ivanas, Oct 7 - 18 seconds (KO)

5. 8.2 score - Zenon Konopka vs Daniel Carcillo, Oct 30 - 82 seconds

6. 8.2 score - Colton Orr vs Deryk Engelland, Oct 13 -18 seconds

7. 8.1 score - Patrick Kaleta vs Derek Dorsett, Dec 3 -17 seconds

8. 8.1 score - Darcy Hordichuk vs Shawn Thornton, Nov 18 - 46 seconds

So go ahead, waste 20 minutes of your life watching those fights, and let me know which one was truly the best.

Boulton vs. Erskine was an absolute war! I’ve also loved, MacIntyre KO over Ivanans, Kaleta vs Dorsett. Last night fight between Cam Janssen and Krys Barch was a dandy, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KGYNGLt1yU

As posted the morning after Janssen/Barch.

He raged at the world, at his family, at his life. But mostly he just raged.
Jay McClement for Selke in 2011. Justice will be served. Penalties will be killed.

Hometown boy

I gave my vote to to the Buffalo, NY native Kaleta for the lefty’s. Tough choice between that, the KO, and Benn showing up old man Iginla.

I voted for Kaleta. Just the sheer level of abuse of Dorsett after he tries a weak hit on Vanek made it the winner.

Engelland and Kaleta have been the two best. Kaleta had the outstanding post-fight taunt too.

Dorsett lands 5 in the time that Kaleta lands 2, then Kaleta lands 17 consecutive punches, including 3 that absolutely rock Dorsett and at the end of the fight, Kaleta is trying to get Dorsett on his feet to punch him a few more times while Dorsett is desperately trying to get to the ice.

Columbus before the fight: 29 points in 23 games – 103 point pace
Columbus since the fight: 14 points in 16 games – 72 point pace

I think Patrick Kaleta punched Columbus in the soul.

Are you listening, Gabe? Goons are worth 30+ points! :)

How does that performance qualify as showing someone up? Hockeyfights scored it about even – was it just because he drew blood?

Much as I enjoyed Smack dropping Ivanans after the Oilers took a 4-0 lead in what’s still probably the best game they’ve played all year (in Game 1), Erskine and Boulton was the best fight of the season. Holy hell.
