Here is what's in the news for Wednesday, April 18, 2012:
More Jets tickets have been seized as part of a drug bust in Winnipeg's West End. The tickets were used as a form of drug payment and were originally seized as proceeds of crime back in October of 2011. [Winnipeg Sun]
In case you live under a rock, the MTS Centre gets loud during Jets games. Just how loud? Geoff Kirbyson’s got you covered: “We asked officials at the MTS Centre that very question and they volunteered to take decibel readings at the last Jets home game against the Tampa Bay Lightning for us. The peak level of 109 was reached after Jim Slater scored the tying goal late in the third period. Van Halen wasn’t in the building that evening, it just felt that way. Panama!” [WFP]
Adam Martini on what the MTS Centre would be like had the Jets qualified for the 2012 NHL playoffs: “Had the Jets made the playoffs, Winnipeg this week would have hosted its first playoff game since 1996. I can see it in my mind, a sea of white washing over the MTS Centre and the crowd in full throat. Just imagine the scene, Ondrej Pavelec kicking out a shot from Zach Parise, or Evander Kane barrelling down the wing and beating Henrik Lundqvist top shelf. Hear the crowd sing-songing, “Hen-riiiiik! Hockey’s Future hands out their post-season prospect hardware for the Winnipeg Jets. Ivan Telegin was your big winner this year. So money. [Hockey’s Future]
Speaking of prospects, namely Ivan Telegin, he and Mark Scheifele’s OHL seasons are over after a 3-2 OT loss in Game 7 against the Ottawa 67’s. Scheifele scored with only seconds left in the game to force overtime, but ultimately, the favoured 67’s prevailed and will face the Niagra IceDogs where they will most probably get steamrolled. Also detailed in the previous article, but Telegin left the game early in the first period after a hit left him unable to put any pressure on his right leg. Andrey Osadchenko spoke with him after the game and he indicated that he heard a crack in his leg after the hit and knew he was done. While Scheifele will most likely report to St. John's of the AHL for their playoff run (practice roster, barring injury) I'd assume Telegin is done for the year. [Barrie Examiner]

Andrew Shaw gets three games for his hit on Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith. [NHL.com]
Arron Asham gets four games for the attempted rearrangement of Brayden Schenn’s face. [NHL.com]
James Neal gets one game for head hunting Claude Giroux and Sean Couturier on the same shift. [NHL.com]
Nicklas Backstrom’s mandatory one game suspension for crosschecking Rich Peverely in the face at the end of Monday’s game will be upheld. [NHL.com]
So if we are just randomly spinning the wheel of justice, how much will Raffi Torres get for his high, late charge on Marian Hossa. Hossa was stretchered off the ice and rushed to hospital due to temporary paralysis. The Blackhakws have stated that he has been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Justin Fisher gets up on his soapbox , beats on his chest to the point of bruising and declares that Brendan Shanahan is to blame for all this post-season chaos. Had he suspended Shea Weber for his excessive roughness on Henrik Zetterberg, all other suspensions and fines would have been averted, as if by some kind of butterfly effect. Sure, that makes sense. I mean, Raffi Torres has never run an opponent in the playoffs playoffs before. Oh wait, he has (Milan Michalek and Brent Seabrook). And in both cases, his hits went unpunished by league officials and yet order across the NHL remained in tact. I’ll admit that Shanahan’s rulings have been nonsensical, but the notion that players are running each other because of Weber v. Zetterberg is a crock. But just keep piling it on. Blame the system, not the players who should know what consists of a dirty hit and the repercussions said hits may carry. [Canada.com]
Raffi Torres transgressions aside, the Phoenix Coyotes took Game 3 of their series with the Chicago Blackhawks in a game that again went to overtime. They now lead the series 2-1. Go Yotes! [Five for Howling, Second City Hockey]
After a sub-par first period in which they tried to shake the memory of Todd Bertuzzi ruining their ping-pong game, the Nashville Predators – namely Pekka Rinne – collected their second franchise win at the Joe Louis Arena, defeating the Detroit Red Wings 3-1, bringing the Wings to within one game of elimination. The Florida Panthers spotted the New Jersey Devils a 3-0 first period lead. No big deal guys, midway through the second period, the score read 4-3 Panthers, which was ultimately the final score. Finally, when Sidney Crosby tears apart the Philadelphia Flyers tonight, you can blame the Philadelphia Daily News for the cover page they printed. [Puck Daddy]
