Recap: Winnipeg Jets @ Calgary Flames

Due to unforeseen circumstances, my morning has been more hectic than expected. As a result, I will try to complete this recap with the same effort the Winnipeg Jets displayed on Monday.

The Jets did start the game off on the right foot and were pressuring Calgary in the early minutes. However, a long stretch pass was intercepted by the Flames’ Kylington and Winnipeg’s defenders allowed him to skate up the ice and beat Hellebuyck with a backhand shot. A couple minutes later, the Jets got their 1st PP of the game and surprise, surprise….Winnipeg netted another goal with the man-advantage. This time it was Monahan lighting the lamp after a nice pass from Connor and the Jets took the lead 42 seconds later when Monahan pocketed his 2nd of the game on a big rebound. Less than 5 minutes later, Perfetti was tripped up and once again Winnipeg scored on the powerplay, with Monahan completing a natural hat trick to give the Jets a 3-1 lead. Unfortunately, bad coverage on a Flames dump in allowed the home team to pull within one before the period ended.

Game Observations:

  • Since the Winnipeg Jets didn’t play a full game, I figured that there was no reason for me to recap the periods they disappeared in…so we ended up with the recap above.
  • Wasn’t a great outing for Connor Hellebuyck in this one (.848%) and it seems that the coaching staff should have started Laurent Brossoit against the Flames.
  • Great game from Sean Monahan spoiled by a lackluster team effort. A natural hatty for Mony and four goals in his last two matches.
  • Another game where the bottom 6 won the 5 on 5 battles, but Winnipeg’s top six was far less effective (1st line 21.2% xG and 2nd line 37.2% xG).
  • Very rough game for the Brenden Dillon/Neal Pionk pairing….-3 rating and a team-worst 31.5% of expected goals for Winnipeg’s defensive pairings.

The team will have to play a lot better if they want to win tonight against the Minnesota Wild. Tonight’s opponents are 4-0-1 in their past 5 games and lit up Vancouver for 10 goals yesterday.

NEXT GAME: Minnesota Wild @ Winnipeg Jets – Tuesday, February 20th @ 7:00 pm Central

Not sure when I will have time to do a preview for tonight’s game, but it might have to wait until after I finish my work day (possibly someone else does one before then?).
