Entering action today, the Winnipeg Jets find themselves in a 3-way tie for 1st place in the NHL with the Boston Bruins and New York Rangers. After spending yesterday golfing in the sunshine with their dads and/or mentors, the Jets will be squaring off with the Arizona Coyotes on Sunday evening.
Winnipeg is definitely coming in hot, winning 5 straight games and getting points in 11 straight matches. Defensively, the Jets have been elite lately, allowing only 1 goal against versus San Jose Sharks/Anaheim Ducks and shutting opponents down to 13 goals in the past 8 games (1.63 goals per game). You have to go back to December 18th to find a game where the Peggers have allowed a team to score 3 goals…and even that took overtime for the Montreal Canadiens achieve.
The division rival Arizona Coyotes are a much more formidable opponent this season, but even so find themselves sitting in 23rd place in the NHL. The Coyotes are only 1 pt out of the final wildcard spot as we near the mid-point of the season, so they still have hopes of a playoff appearance in the back of their minds. Going 2-3-0 in their past 5 games, the Yotes have only scored a goal per game in their previous two outings resulting in a 2 game losing streak.
Today’s matchup could end up being a goaltending duel, as Winnipeg’s Connor Hellebuyck has been playing at an elite level (2.28 GAA/.921%) and Arizona’s Connor Ingram has also performed very well (2.61 GAA/.916%).
With no official practice for the Winnipeg Jets prior to the game, any lineup changes are unknown. It is expected Hellebuyck will return to the crease after Brossoit’s great performance versus the Ducks and I would think the rest of the lineup will remain the same.
