Right winger Lee Stempniak has retired from pro hockey. Drafted in the fifth round, 158th overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues, Stempniak has 469 points (203G, 266A) in 911 games, as well as six points (3G, 3A) in 28 playoff games, for St. Louis (2005/06-partway through 2008/09), Toronto (partway through 2008/09-partway through 2009/10), Phoenix (partway through 2009/10-2010/11), Calgary (2011/12-partway through 2013/14), Pittsburgh (part of 2013/14), the Rangers (part of 2014/15), Winnipeg (part of 2014/15), New Jersey (part of 2015/16), Boston (part of 2015/16, 2018/19), and Carolina (2016/17-2017/18). A regular 30-50 point scorer through his career who could be a reliable piece for any team, I honestly thought he could challenge Mike Sillinger for the record for most NHL teams played for in his career. An injury keeping him out for most of the 2017/18 season ensured that that wouldn’t happen. Stempniak has career-highs of 52 points in 2007 with St. Louis, 28 goals with Toronto and Phoenix in 2010, and 32 assists in 2016 with New Jersey and Boston. Stempniak finished his final legit NHL season with 40 points (16G, 24A) in 82 games for Carolina in 2017. Missing most of the following seasons with injuries, Stempniak finished the following season with nine points (3G, 6A) in 37 games for Carolina and zero points in one game for AHL Charlotte, followed by 18 points in 20 games for AHL Providence and zero points in two games for Boston. Stempniak, 36, didn’t receive even so much as a tryout for this season.
