Cole’s Notes From Around the League: 7/27/19-8/2/19

Anaheim Ducks

The Ducks made no moves this week.

Arizona Coyotes

The Coyotes made no moves this week. Right winger Brandon Yip, who last played in the NHL in 2013/14 for Arizona, has signed a two-year contract in China with the KHL’s Kunlun Red Star.

Boston Bruins

The Bruins made no moves this week.

Buffalo Sabres

The Sabres re-signed left winger Remi Elie to a one-year contract.

Calgary Flames

The Flames re-signed goaltender David Rittich to a two-year contract. They bought out defenceman Michael Stone. Left winger Kerby Rychel has signed a one-year contract in Sweden with the KHL’s Orebro HK.

Carolina Hurricanes

The Hurricanes made no moves this week.

Right winger Andreas Nodl has retired from pro hockey. Drafted in the second round, 39th overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers, Nodl has 36 points (15G, 21A) in 183 games, as well as zero points in 12 playoff games, for Philadelphia (2008/09-partway through 2011/12) and Carolina (partway through 2011/12-2012/13). In his brief stint in the NHL, his career-highs are 22 points, 11 goals, and 11 assists, all reached in 2011 with Philadelphia. Even though he initially seemed to progress as at least a solid bottom-six forward, he failed to build on 2011, being claimed off waivers early in the 2011/12 season by Carolina, only to spend most of the 2012/13 season in the AHL and not get a qualifying offer. He would spend the next six seasons in Austria’s Erste Bank Eishockey Liga, including five straight seasons with the Vienna Capitals, the last two of which were spent as captain. Nodl finished his last season in the NHL with eight points (3G, 5A) in 60 games between Philadelphia and Carolina. Nodl, 32, finished his last pro season with 30 points in 47 games for the EBEL’s Vienna Capitals.

Chicago Blackhawks

The Blackhawks made no moves this week.

Left winger Chris Kunitz has retired from pro hockey. Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2003 by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Kunitz has 619 points (268G, 351A) in 1022 games, as well as 93 points (27G, 66A) in 178 playoff games for Anaheim (2003/04-partway through 2008/09), Pittsburgh (partway through 2008/09-2016/17), Tampa Bay (2017/18), and Chicago (2018/19). Kunitz has four Stanley Cups under his belt, one with Anaheim in 2007 and three with Pittsburgh, in 2009, 2016, and 2017, and also won a Gold Medal at the Olympics with Team Canada in 2014. Kunitz’s career-highs are 68 points and 35 goals in 2014 with Pittsburgh, and 35 assists, both in 2007 with Anaheim and in 2012 with Pittsburgh. While Kunitz is probably most remembered for the significant offensive totals he posted while playing on a line with Sidney Crosby during his tenure in Pittsburgh, seasons such as his 60 points the year the Ducks won the Cup show he did have his own ability to produce. Kunitz began to decline after his successful 2014 season, with two 40-point seasons and two 29-point seasons following as he was part of Pittsburgh’s back-to-back Cups and played one year with Tampa Bay. Kunitz finished his final NHL season with 10 points (5G, 5A) in 56 games for Chicago. Kunitz, 39, will join the Blackhawks’ staff as a Player Development Advisor.

Colorado Avalanche

The Avalanche re-signed centre Vladislav Kamenev to a one-year contract. They re-signed defenceman Samuel Girard to a seven-year contract. They re-signed left winger AJ Greer to a one-year contract.

Columbus Blue Jackets

The Blue Jackets made no moves this week.

Dallas Stars

The Stars made no moves this week.

Detroit Red Wings

The Red Wings made no moves this week.

Florida Panthers

The Panthers made no moves this week.

Los Angeles Kings

The Kings made no moves this week.

Minnesota Wild

The Wild made no moves this week.

Montreal Canadiens

The Canadiens re-signed right winger Michael McCarron to a one-year contract.

Nashville Predators

The Predators made no moves this week.

New Jersey Devils

The Devils acquired left winger Nikita Gusev from Vegas and signed him to a two-year contract. They re-signed defenceman Will Butcher to a three-year contract. Defenceman Ryan Murphy has signed a one-year contract in Russia with the KHL’s Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk. Defenceman Marc-Andre Gragnani, who last played in the NHL for New Jersey in 2015/16, has signed in Belarus with the KHL’s Dinamo Minsk.

New York Islanders

The Islanders made no moves this week.

Centre Stephen Gionta has retired from pro hockey. Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2006 by the New Jersey Devils, Gionta has 56 points (16G, 40A) in 301 games, as well as seven points (3G, 4A) in 24 playoff games, for New Jersey (2010/11-2015/16) and the Islanders (2016/17, 2018/19). After playing only 13 games in the NHL between the 2011 and 2012 seasons, Gionta centered Ryan Carter and Steve Bernier on the CBGB line (Carter, Bernier, [Brian] Gionta’s brother), during the Devils’ unlikely 2012 Cup run, which account for the literal entirety of Gionta’s NHL postseason experience. It was the best Fourth Line in Hockey™ that year, and Gionta would spend all of the next four seasons at the NHL level. Gionta played 31 NHL games across two of the three seasons since leaving New Jersey, spending the bulk of his time with AHL Bridgeport. Gionta has career-highs of 14 points reached in 2013, five goals in 2015, and 10 assists in 2013 and 2016, all with New Jersey. Gionta went pointless in five games for the Islanders and scored four points in 26 games for AHL Bridgeport in his final NHL season. Gionta, 35, has been hired by the Tampa Bay Lightning as a professional scout.

New York Rangers

The Rangers bought out defenceman Kevin Shattenkirk.

Ottawa Senators

The Senators acquired right winger Ryan Callahan and a 2020 fifth-round pick from Tampa Bay.

Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers made no moves this week.

Pittsburgh Penguins

The Penguins made no moves this week.

San Jose Sharks

The Sharks made no moves this week.

Right winger Zack Stortini has retired from pro hockey. Drafted in the third round, 94th overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers, Stortini has 41 points (14G, 27A) in 257 games for Edmonton (2006/07-2010/11) and Nashville (2011/12). The winger lined up in Edmonton on an effective fourth line with Kyle Brodziak and Curtis Glencrss during the 2007/08 season, but those two would be gone by the start of the 2009/10 season. Stortini would not see any significant improvement following that season, resulting in the enforcer splitting the 2010/11 season between the Oilers and their AHL affiliate, before playing one last NHL game the following year. Stortini’s career-highs are 13 points, reached in 2010; six goals, reached in 2009; and nine assists, reached in 2008 and 2010, all with Edmonton. After the 2010/11 season, Stortini would play one NHL game with Nashville and then sign deals to play in the minors for the Anaheim, Philadelphia, and Ottawa organizations. He was last under contract with San Jose after a trade during the 2016/17 season, spending his last two seasons playing for the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers. In his last season with NHL time, he was scoreless in one game for Nashville and 15 points in 74 games for AHL Milwaukee in 2011/12. He had four assists in 32 games for Edmonton and three points in 23 games for AHL Oklahoma City the year before. In his last pro season, Stortini was scoreless in 24 games for AHL Charlotte. Stortini, 33, will be joining the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves as an assistant coach.

St. Louis Blues

The Blues signed centre Nikita Alexandrov to a three-year entry-level contract.

Tampa Bay Lightning

Vancouver Canucks

Winnipeg Jets
