Goaltender Carter Hutton has retired from pro hockey. Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2010 by the San Jose Sharks, Hutton has a 94-90-27 record, 0.908 Save%, 2.76 GAA, and 13 shutouts in 235 games, as well as a 0-0 record, 0.667 Save%, 3.00 GAA, and zero shutouts in three playoff games, for Chicago (2012/13), Nashville (2013/14-2015/16), St. Louis (2016/17-2017/18), Buffalo (2018/19-2020/21), and Arizona (2021/22). Hutton’s career bests are 20 wins in 2014 with Nashville, and a 0.931 Save% and 2.09 GAA in 2018 and four shutouts in 2017, all with with St. Louis. Hutton was generally a backup goaltender in his career, though the well-traveled netminder had two seasons as a starter. In 2014, with Pekka Rinne limited by injuries to 25 games, Hutton played 40 games on the season to lead the team, and he began his stint in Buffalo with a season of 50 games in 2018/19. Unfortunately that would be the beginning of the end of his NHL career. He only posted a 0.908 Save% and won 18 games that season, and his games played, and personal stats, all dwindled steadily from there. Hutton missed most of this season between a stint on the COVID-19 list and an ankle injury, and down the stretch was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs for future considerations. He was immediately assigned to the Marlies but never played for them. Hutton finished his last NHL season with a 0-2-0 record, 0.741 Save%, 7.76 GAA, and zero shutouts in three games for the Arizona Coyotes. Hutton, 36, says he’s been considering retirement for some time considering the league’s shift towards youth, and that his injury was a factor in him making the decision now.
