Cole’s Notes From Around the League: 5/8/21-5/14/21

Anaheim Ducks

The Ducks reassigned centre Sam Carrick to AHL San Diego. They reassigned defencemen Simon Benoit and Josh Mahura.

Goaltender Ryan Miller has retired from pro hockey. Drafted in the fifth round, 138th overall, by the Buffalo Sabres, Miller has a 391-289-1-87 record, 0.914 Save%, 2.64 GAA, and 44 shutouts, in 796 games, as well as a 28-27 record, 0.913 Save%, 2.52 GAA, and three shutouts, for the Buffalo Sabres (2002/03-partway through 2013/14), St. Louis Blues (part of 2013/14), Vancouver Canucks (2014/15-2016/17), and Anaheim Ducks (2017/18-2020/21). Miller’s best period was the inter-lockout era. After playing only 18 games in the NHL in the two seasons immediately preceding the 2004/05 lockout, seasons spent mostly in the AHL, Miller backstopped the Sabres to back-to-back playoff appearances after they had missed three straight years before the lockout. The latter of those two seasons, 2006/07, saw Miller backstopping a fairly stacked team to the President’s Trophy, and ultimately the Eastern Conference Final while also playing in his only All-Star Game. While they didn’t make it the year after, Miller also got Buffalo back to the 2010 and 2011 playoffs, winning a Vezina Trophy and Silver at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Sadly, the Sabres haven’t made it back to the playoffs since 2011, even with solid seasons from Miller in 2012 and 2013. The beginning of a rebuild resulted in Miller being traded to St. Louis to close the 2013/14 season and then spending three years as the starter of the post-Roberto Luongo Canucks. Miller has spent the last four seasons as the backup to John Gibson in Anaheim. Miller’s career-highs are 41 wins, a 0.929 Save%, 2.22 GAA, all with Buffalo in 2010, and six shutouts in 2015 with Vancouver. While by no means a lock, with seven playoff finishes versus nine outside the playoffs, only one Vezina, only Silver rather than Gold at the Olympics, and only three seasons coming legitimately close to a championship, with zero Cups, Miller’s individual performances and accolades may make him a Hall of Fame candidate when he is up for eligibility in 2024. Miller finished his final NHL season with a 4-8-2 record, 0.882 Save%, 3.51 GAA, and zero shutouts in 16 games for the Ducks. Miller, 40, announced his retirement on April 29 and played in two games following the announcement: a 6-2 win against Los Angeles on May 1 and a 4-3 loss to Minnesota on May 8, the last game of the Ducks’ season.
