Chicago Blackhawks

The Blackhawks reassigned centre Brandon Pirri and defenceman Lucas Carlsson to AHL Rockford.

Defenceman Brent Seabrook has retired from pro hockey. Drafted in the first round, 14th overall, by the Chicago Blackhawks, Seabrook has 464 points (103G, 361A) in 1114 games, as well as 59 points (20G, 39A) in 123 playoff games, for Chicago (2005/06-2019/20). Seabrook carved out a very solid career for himself, with career highs of 49 points and 14 goals in 2016 and 39 assists in 2011. During the vast majority of his career with the Blackhawks, Seabrook formed an excellent top defence pairing with Duncan Keith, a prototypical “good skating puck mover plus physical guy” pairing, but solid enough to help the Blackhawks offence. Though he never hit 50 points in a season, it was good enough that Seabrook was actually able to score more points than Keith on four occasions: 2006 (32 vs 21), 2011 (48 vs 45), 2016 (49 vs 43), and 2019 (28 vs 27). Seabrook was selected to play in the All-Star Game in 2015, and won Stanley Cups with Chicago in 2010, 2013, and 2015. Sadly, the latter half of the 2010s saw a decline in Seabrook’s performance, with his mobility, his defensive performance, and his offensive production all declining, hitting its nadir last season when Seabrook was placed on LTIR for shoulder surgery partway through last season. Seabrook has been on injured reserve since the start of this season with a back injury. Seabrook finished his last NHL season with four points (3G, 1A) in 32 games in 2020, finishing his last legitimate NHL season with 28 points (5G, 23A) in 78 games in 2019. Seabrook, 35, cited ongoing hip issues and general wear and tear as the reason for his retirement.

Right winger Colin McDonald, who was last in the NHL in training camp with the Islanders in 2019, has retired from pro hockey. Drafted in the second round 51st overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers, McDonald has 46 points (20G, 26A) in 148 games, as well as three points (2G, 1A) in 11 playoff games, for Edmonton (2009/10), Pittsburgh (2011/12), the Islanders (2012/13-2014/15), and Philadelphia (2015/16-2016/17). He has career-highs of 18 points, 8 goals, and 10 assists, all in 2014 with the Islanders, though he also reached 10 assists in 2013. A career depth winger despite his relatively high position in a draft as talent-rich as 2003, McDonald spent the majority of his last three NHL seasons in the minors, and spent all of the last three seasons that followed, his last three pro seasons, in the AHL. He finished his last full season in the NHL, 2013/14, with 18 points (8G, 10A) in 70 games for the Islanders, but he had one goal in three games for Philadelphia in the last season he played an NHL game, 2016/17.
