Defenceman Deryk Engelland has retired from pro hockey. Drafted in the sixth round, 194th overall, in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils, Engelland had 127 points (30G, 97A) in 671 games, as well as five points (0G, 5A) in 55 playoff games, for Pittsburgh (2009/10-2013/14), Calgary (2014/15-2016/17), and Vegas (2017/18-2019/20). An enforcer type for the bulk of his career, his career was changed by joining the Golden Knights. Engelland had spent parts of his first two pro seasons with the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL, and had in that time made the city his home, so when the NHL granted Las Vegas an expansion franchise it didn’t take long for people to see Engelland as a natural fit. Sure enough, he was the Golden Knights’ selection from the Flames and would go on to a much larger role than was anticipated, wearing an alternate captain’s “A,” playing more minutes, and surprisingly showing some offensive ability. Engelland has career highs of 18 assists and 23 points in 2018 with Vegas and six goals in 2014 with Pittsburgh. Engelland finished his final NHL season with six points (1G, 5A) in 49 games with Vegas. Engelland, 38, will transition to the Vegas Golden Knights foundation and become a special assistant to the Owner.
The Capitals signed left winger Conor Sheary to a one-year contract.
