Centre Derek MacKenzie has retired from pro hockey. Drafted in the fifth round, 128th overall, in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft by the Atlanta Thrashers, MacKenzie has 125 points (51G, 74A) in 611 games, as well as two point (1G, 1A) in 12 playoff games, for Atlanta (2001/02-2006/07), Columbus (2007/08-2013/14), and Florida (2014/15-2018/19). A gritty depth centre, MacKenzie only had cups of coffee at the NHL level during the 2000s, playing only 64 games between his 2002 NHL debut and 2010. He spent the 2010s as a fourth-line centre for whatever team he’d be playing for, on the roster mainly for intangibles. The veteran was named team captain for the 2016/17 season following Willie Mitchell’s retirement. Having announced at the beginning of the season his intention to retire, MacKenzie relinquished the captaincy to young star Aleksander Barkov. MacKenzie set career-highs of nine goals in 2011 and 2014, both with Columbus, and 14 assists and 23 points, also in 2011 with Columbus. MacKenzie, 37, finished his final NHL season with one scoreless game, unfortunately missing all but the opener of his final season to shoulder surgery, though he had 14 points (3G, 11A) in 75 games the season prior.
The Kings named Todd McLellan head coach.
Goaltender Peter Budaj has retired from pro hockey. Drafted in the second round, 63rd overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche, Budaj has a 158-132-40 record, 0.904 Save%, 2.70 GAA, and 18 shutouts in 368 games, as well as a 0-2 record, 0.893 Save%, 5.10 GAA, and zero shutouts in seven playoff games for Colorado (2005/06-2010/11), Montreal (2011/12-2013/14), Los Angeles (2015/16-partway through 2016/17, 2018/19), and Tampa Bay (partway through 2016/17-2017/18). As a depth goaltender, Budaj doesn’t really have any standout aspects to his career. His most notable season was 2016/17, when he played a career-high 60 games between the Kings and Lightning only two years after he was acquired by Winnipeg and spent the entire season in the AHL. His career-highs are a 30-21-3 record, 0.915 Save%, 2.18 GAA, and seven shutouts in 2017 with Los Angeles and Tampa Bay. Budaj, 36, retires after posting an 0-1-0 record, 0.818 Save%, 5.02 GAA, and zero shutouts in three games, along with a 7-11-7 record, 0.890 Save%, 3.73 GAA, and one shutout in 27 games for the AHL’s Ontario Reign.
