Appleton named AHL’s Top Rookie

Mason Appleton of the Manitoba Moose, a 6th round pick by the Winnipeg Jets in 2015, has won the AHL’s Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award for Top Rookie.

Appleton has 21 goals and 42 assists while appearing in all 73 Moose games this year. The Moose wrap up the regular season this weekend with three games.

Appleton, 22, spent the previous two seasons with the Michigan State Spartans.

This is the third individual award for a member of the Moose, with Pascal Vincent winning the Louis A. R. Pieri Memorial Award as the AHL’s most outstanding coach, and Sami Niku winning the Eddie Shore Award as the AHL’s top defenceman. Niku and Appleton were both named to the AHL’s First All-Star Team, and All-Rookie Team. Michael Hutchinson was named to the AHL’s Second All-Star Team.
