Scouting the Winnipeg Jets 2017 NHL Draft: Juuso Valimaki prospect profile

Synopsis:

If you want a defenceman with smarts, skill, and size, look no further than Juuso Valimaki of the WHL’s Tri-City Americans. Though not towering, his 6’2” height is adequate for any NHL team looking to bolster their blue line. Like many of the prospects that have been profiled before him, Valimaki thinks the game at a high level which allows him to make plays in all zones. The young Finnish rearguard has a very good shot - as evidenced by his 19 goals this season - and his primary points per game of 0.70 ranks him well above his peers at the position.

A good all-around blueliner who’s enjoyed great experience at the junior and international level. Not huge, but possesses great awareness.

Teemu Selanne was his boyhood idol and he’s met the President of Finland.

Why a fit with the Winnipeg Jets:

I mean, come on! What’s not to like? As mentioned in the synopsis, Valimaki is a very well-rounded player. Though none of his traits project elite talent, he does possess enough skill to make a difference at the next level. He is said to have good leadership traits and has experience quarterbacking Tri-City’s power play. Much like Nick Suzuki before him, Juuso Valimaki continually checks the boxes of what is required from an NHL player. Add to it the fact he could quickly grow into an everyday role with the Jets given some of their blueline depth and it’s hard not to see this as being a slam dunk selection.
