The NHL has released their national broadcast schedule for the 2012-13 season and once again the response from Winnipeg Jet’s fans seems to be mixed. TSN will only be broadcasting 5 Jets games nationally and that leaves some Winnipeg fans feeling a little under-represented. On the other hand, the CBC will be airing almost a quarter of the Jets schedule. All in all it seems Winnipeg is fairly well represented.
Lets take a closer look.

Thoughts:
- Seventeen of the Jets’ twenty six nationally broadcasted games will be home games. More than 40% of Jets’ home games will be broadcased nationally, that means the loudest crowd in the league will have a sizeable audience on a regular basis.
- Seven of the Jets 21 CBC games will be afternoon affairs (1:00PM or 2:00PM starts). Looks like we will have to hit the couch and start drinking early.
- The Jet’s will play the Canucks in the Hockey Day in Canada late game.
Let’s take a look at the Jets’ national game relative to the other Canadian clubs.
Team | CBC | TSN | Total |
Montreal | 29 | 15 | 44 |
Toronto | 25 | 19 | 44 |
Ottawa | 18 | 10 | 28 |
Winnipeg | 21 | 5 | 26 |
Edmonton | 12 | 13 | 25 |
Vancouver | 15 | 10 | 25 |
Calgary | 13 | 10 | 23 |
Thoughts:
- The Jets quite clearly aren’t high on TSN’s play list. Could this be because they own the region rights and want to protect that investment? Maybe.
- The CBC loves Winnipeg this year. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens are the only teams with more CBC games. The Jets didn’t do too poorly.
- Toronto and Montreal are big draws and their broadcast schedule reflects as much. The Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers on the other hand are awful. Boo to Alberta!
- The Jets 26 National games are 4th most / least among Canadian teams.
I suppose it is possible that TSN wants to keep as many Jets games as possible for their regional television deal. If that isn't the case, it seems they don't consider the Jets a major draw to national audiences. The CBC on the other hand disagrees. They plans to air more than a quarter of the Jets regular season games. All in all, the Jets are well represented on National TV.
What about the Jets’ national broadcast schedule stands out to you?
