Game Preview: Jets Winning at Home Only Sens-ical
As I write this after the Grey Cup I think to myself "I'd rather be a Bomber fan than an Ottawa Renegade fan. Those guys haven't won a game in years!"
But I digress.
The Winnipeg Jets play 13 of their next 15 games at home, and they kick off that span by taking on the Ottawa Senators Tuesday night. The Jets are coming off a loss to the Bruins that saw them keep it close til an empty netter sealed it in a 4-2 effort that was not the finest example of their abilities. The Sens are coming off a close victory over the Hurricanes they saw them take it 4-3.
The Sens are in many ways similar to the Jets, with a few players under performing, a starting goalie with a save percentage that isn't 90% and only a couple of names that you would consider for the All Star team.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: This is a winnable game. If the Jets go go into the Bear Den and battle with Boston on no rest, then they can surely do some damage to the Sens.
Keys to the Game, Player Numbers, Lineups and Cake will be served after THE JUMP
Keys to the Game:
- No silly mistakes: Stupid penalties, pinching in when you shouldn't, allowing short-handed goals, trusting Buff on defense. These are all silly mistakes that cannot be repeated if the Jets are to emerge victorious.
- Put the Special Back in Special Teams: Score goals on the power play and make sure the other team doesn't score when they have the power play. In a similar note...don't allow short-handed goals.
- Dustin Byfuglien should quit playing games with my heart. Seriously, there was the good Buff scoring one and setting up another, then BAM there was the bad Buff being nowhere to be found on defense. His playing wasn't exactly what a girl wants. And it sure as hell wasn't what I want.
- Will the real Eric Fehr please stand up, please stand up please stand up? Because I'm beginning to wonder how good Danick Paquette is. I have faith in Fehr's abilities but boy howdy he certainly didn't show those off in the game against Boston.
- Make the Hangar a place where no one wants to play. The Jets have the opportunity to make hay while the sun shines and all those bad slogans as they have a glut of home games coming up. I'm not asking for 26 points out of those 13 home games. But would 25 hurt?

#29 Johnny Oduya -- #4 Zach Bogosian
#44 Arturs Kulda -- #36 Mark Flood

Once again there will be questions about who starts on the 4th line, and I once again have questions about the availability of Ron Hainsey. Arturs Kulda and Jason Jaffray remain options for Winnipeg.
UPDATE: Jaffray in for Stapleton, Hainsey still out so Kulda back in.

Could see a Brian Lee or a Stephane Da Costa slot in, but it's Sunday night and this is what the Senators put on the ice against the Canes.
Player to boo mercilessly: With Chris Neil not playing I'm a little lost here. If Zenon Konopka plays boo him, because he's about as useful as a poopy flavored lollipop. I can skate and punch people in the face too, doesn't mean I should be in the NHL.
Prediction: Winnipeg 4-1 Ottawa. The Sens score a flukey goal, the Jets control the game. Winnipeg kills a 5 on 3. Buff gets caught pinching at least once. Claude Noel does not emote. The game is a sellout.

Bogo is due for a goal.
I think Burmi sets one up too. Can Kane keep it going.
Big fan of our youngsters!!
We just really need to put these guys away
We are a better team than the Senators…but we’ve also proven to be capable of playing crappy enough to lose to them.

I love how much the team we follow impacts our predictions
See, for instance, the Ottawa Senators prediction panel, composed of bloggers and beat writers from the city: Six predict a Senators win, two predict a Jets win.
Then again, these predictions are worth their weight in gold. We’ll see what happens.
Here’s to a good game tonight!

FWIW
The people who picked the Jets have been right 72% of the time this year, while the people who picked the Senators have been correct 60% of the time.
That said, the picker with the best record to date, who accurately picked 19 of 23 games, did pick the Senators.

Haha, you're funny today.
Everyone knows Konopka can’t skate.

Were there really twelve other Titan fans in Winnipeg?

Nope, I just stuck 13 at the end.

Those are some crazy lines
How do they use Slater’s line? Noel has loved matching him against tough opposition but they can’t possibly use Jaffray & Thorburn against Ottawa’s top 2 lines, can they?
Personally I’d rather see GST back and jaff slot in with Burmi and Fehr, but alas I’m not the coach

I agree.
I hope Thorburn and Jaff are not afforded a ton of minutes with this set up.

That would be my thought. Slater will see the Faceoff dot alot which will help his ice time

Agreed.
The bottom six here would be a new mix. I understand putting Fehr and Burmi together in hopes of generating some offence, but Glass doesn’t really add anything there.
Slater is a solid 4th line player, but Thorburn and Jaff scare me.

I really liked the short lived Burmi, Glass & Slater combo
If you’re going to use Slater in a shutdown role at least give him some decent linemates.
I wish they’d create 1 good line out of the bottom pairing instead of 2 flawed ones.
I understand pairing Burmi with Fehr.
Both are solid two way players and of the bottom 6 they have the most offencive upside. Filling out the left wing is an issue though. Coach doesn’t seem to trust Jaff and Glass really is a 4th line grinder and nothing more.
GST & Stapleton or Jaffray with Burmi / Fehr are the combos that make sense to me.
Finding better players to replace Thorburn and Jaffray would be optimum though.
What 2 lines would you create?
by truck on Nov 29, 2011 8:19 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I'd try Fehr, Slater & Burmi together
Give them 15+ minutes a night.
Thorburn, Jaffray or Stapleton & Glass get a shift or 2 a period. I’d rather we run 3 lines than try and balance out 4. The talent just isn’t deep enough.
I don't mind that line, but Glass, Stapleton and Thorburn
Makes me wanna cry. That said, I am not a ton more confident with Slater in the middle.

No arguments about Glass, Stapleton & Thorburn
That’s an average AHL line at best. The key would be low minutes and easy competition.
Glass / Burmi / Fehr looked decent.

Konopka>Thorburn any day of the week and twice on Sunday...
I take Konopka and his 2 goals and 2 assists along with a FO% of 60% any day over Chris Thorburn and his 1 assist?? seeing as how as you compared apples with apples…“If Zenon Konopka plays boo him, because he’s about as useful as a poopy flavored lollipop. I can skate and punch people in the face too, doesn’t mean I should be in the NHL.”
I mean in this case if you think so little of the ability of Konopka what exactly does that make Thorburn’s skill set then??? Just sayin….
you want me to boo a Jet?
that just ain’t happening

Zenon Konopka is a wrestler who learned how to tie skates.
At least Thorburn can effectively not look out of place on the ice.
