Optimism in Philadelphia
No jokes about it always being sunny in Philadelphia. Seriously.
Ok, apparently my Stanley Cup poll has been overrun by Philadelphia fans who think the Flyers will win in 6 or 7. In other words, people who think the Flyers have a 55-60% chance of winning this series. Really?
I said I wasn't going to reveal my pick...But I think I have to: Chicago is a 70% favorite to win this series.
But in the spirit of welcoming diverse ideas, here's another poll for you to fill out...
Also - anyone who's so confident about the Flyers that they'll give me 2-1 odds (ie - each team is equally likely to win), please leave a comment, and we can make a bet with the proceeds going to a charity of the winner's choice.

For what it’s worth in the early going most votes were Hawks in 5 and Hawks in 6 by quite a bit, at least visually (then Flyers in 7, Hawks in 7, Hawks in 4, I think).

Especiallly since the Blackhawks already took out the Green Men in Round 2.
The Flyers beat a reasonably good New Jersey team, and two softball teams in Boston and Montreal. The Blackhawks beat two reasonably good teams in Nashville and Vancouver, plus a genuinely good team in San Jose (in 4).
I do think Philly underpreformed in the regular season, but I don’t see how they’re anything but a heavy underdog in this series. 30% sounds right: Chicago is twice as much more likely to win this series than Philly is.

I couldn’t bring myself to pick zero, but I think 15% might still be a little high…

It's 100%
For Philly to win in Game 7.
Hossa, remember?
Dear Colorado Avalanche: Thank you for the excitement, see you in October.
odds
the betting line against the flyers is so unbelievably outrageous that the only natural thing to happen is that the flyers win. i mean, the flyers even beat these guys in the regular season.
i’ve been trying to find historical things on heavy underdogs but i can’t find anything.

I’m going to guess that normally heavy underdogs lose.

talent gap
is the talent gap large enough between these two teams that the odds makers would make it a 70/30 split?
they are arguably equal in almost every way with a very slight edge in talent to the blackhawks. i just don’t see how a slight margin in more talent on the blackhawks side ends up making them a 70% favorite.

Chicago is #1 in the league in shots for at 5-on-5, and #1 in the league in shots against (ie – fewest shots allowed). They are essentially as dominant as Detroit was in 2007-08. And they just dispatched the #2 team in the league in four games.
Philly is a hair above average, but has a minor-league goaltender. They wouldn’t even be favored against Nashville.
No idea how you decided they were “equal in almost every way.”

Agree
I’m rooting for Philly in this series, but they would have been a 12th in the western conference (and this was based on playing an Eastern conference schedule mind you. who knows how many points they would been able to rack up had they played the same schedule as, say, the Dallas Stars).
Chicago was #2 in that conference… by one point. I’m not exactly sure how they are almost equal.

On paper (that is, simply personnel-wise) they may look kind of close, but Chicago executes above their talent level, I’d say, while Philly still executes under their talent level.

I’d disagree. Toews is a top notch player, as is Kane, and everyone knows this. But Chicago’s defensive corps (Keith, Seabrook, Soepel, Hjalmarsson and Campbell) are second to none.
Chicago has three of the top defensive forwards in the league, in Bolland, Madden and Toews, and their forwards are all very good. In their top 9 the only one I might suggest is playing over his head a little would be Ladd.

I’m a Hawks guy … but Byfuglien is definitely playing above his head; also, I’d include Hossa as a top defensive forward.

Should have said top defensive centers. Hossa is certainly a good defensive forward

Bolland’s are just the opposite. Quenneville is doing a really nice job with that team.

I’m a Flyers fan and I think its a pretty even match-up. Everyone is spinning stats and the teams playoff victories into reasons why their team is the best. Flyers dominated the Devils in the reagular season so no one was scared of them in the playoffs and the Sharks are notorious playoff chokers so we should’nt act like Chicago beat the two time champs.
"All hail the Flyers" Jim Jackson.
I’m just pointing out that both sides are trying their best to down play the other teams achievements while over inflating their own acomplishments.
