2010 Olympic Hockey Bracket: the Most Likely Outcome
Following on with the simulation I did for my previous post, which gives Team USA a 50/50 chance of reaching the finals, I wanted to show the tournament outcome that came up the most often. And it's one that'll make the hometown fans very happy:
| 2010 Olympic Mens Hockey Bracket - Most Likely Outcome |
||||
| Playoff Qualifier 1 | Quarterfinal 1 | |||
| #8 Switzerland | #1 USA | |||
| #9 Belarus | #8 Switzerland | Semifinal 1 | ||
| Playoff Qualifier 2 | Quarterfinal 4 | #1 USA | Final | Gold Medal |
| #5 Czech Republic | #4 Finland | #5 Czech Republic | #1 USA | #6 Canada |
| #12 Latvia | #5 Czech Republic | #6 Canada | Silver Medal | |
| Playoff Qualifier 3 | Quarterfinal 3 | #1 USA | ||
| #7 Slovakia | #2 Sweden | 3rd Place | Bronze Medal | |
| #10 Norway | #7 Slovakia | Semifinal 2 | #2 Sweden | #2 Sweden |
| Playoff Qualifier 4 | Quarterfinal 2 | #2 Sweden | #5 Czech Republic | |
| #6 Canada | #3 Russia | #6 Canada | ||
| #11 Germany | #6 Canada | |||
Keep in mind that the most-likely outcome is not very likely: odds are that you'll see a completely different universe of other outcomes! But the people out there who put money on this tournament are betting on this one.

Judging by how Russia beat Canada four years ago (when Malkin and Ovechkin were practically kids), and how Russia beat Canada in the last two world cups (most recent one did not even feature Malkin and Ovechkin on the roster), I’m not sure Canada’s chances to pass Russia are as good as they’re shown here.
If Canada does not get their chemistry going
they will not beat Russia, I don’t think. Russia, if nothing else, has got its goaltending and top line going for it.

Russia over Canada, Russia over Sweden, Russia over USA.
Sorry Canada, and although I would love to see gold for my Yanks, I think we have a much better shot in Sochi 2014.

Before the tournament, I’d say I would be thrilled with a silver for the US.
But in a revenge loss to Canada? Come on.
I hope you are right in that the most-likely outcome doesn’t come out.
