Although I have my hands full getting all these preview articles done, there is still a need to do the occasional one about our Winnipeg Jets. With just over two weeks until Mark Scheifele and the boys face off against the Edmonton Oilers in the pre-season opener, there is still not a whole lot going in Jets-land. Cole Perfetti remains without a contract and there hasn’t even been the slightest whisper of a trade rumour involving Winnipeg. No players invited for a Professional Try Out (PTO). No new signings. Basically, nothing is happening.
One thing did pop up on the Cole Perfetti front though. It seems that while his agent and GM Kevin Cheveldayoff are still working on his next contract, the 22 yr old forward has decided to put that to the back of his mind and keep preparing for the upcoming season in the usual manner. Props to young Cole for showing up in the Peg recently to join some of his teammates for some pre-training camp skates! Here’s hoping Fetti is rewarded with a breakout season. Guess we could possibly think this news might signal the Jets are close to making a deal, but that goes against media reports that there is still a significant gap to overcome. Get the deal done already, Chevy.
The Winnipeg Jets have also announced the franchise’s attendees for this year’s Young Star Classic in Penticton, British Columbia. Some of the team’s top prospects will be on the ice when things get under way on Friday, September 13th. For forwards, there will be the newly acquired Brayden Yager, speedy Brad Lambert, fiesty Nikita Chibrikov, and the healthy Chaz Lucius. The defensive core will include up to 5 players who will be with the Manitoba Moose this season, featuring former 2nd round pick Elias Salomonsson. In between the pipes, both of Winnipeg’s top goaltending prospects will see action, with Thomas Milic and Dominic DiVincentiis sharing the crease at the tourney for the 2nd straight season.
