The Winnipeg Jets had strung together two good performances in a row…could they keep it going against the Carolina Hurricanes and end their road trip with a 3-1-0 record??? Lets find out….
GAME RECAP
The Jets shot out of the gate early in the game and that allowed the visitors to get some early scoring opportunities on the Hurricanes’ Frederik Andersen. Unfortunately, penalty trouble spoiled Winnipeg’s momentum and that allowed Carolina to work their way back into the match. The Canes ended up out-shooting the Jets 7-4 in the 1st with the help of two powerplays, but it was a late even strength goal by newly acquired Mark Jankowski that gave them a 1-0 lead heading into the middle frame.
In the 2nd period, it seemed that the hometown squad had more energy and that allowed them to get the better scoring opportunities. Connor Hellebuyck was able to keep 10 out of the 11 shots he faced out of the net, but Jankowski added his second of the match 5 minutes in to give the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead. The Jets did have a handful of dangerous looks, but weren’t doing enough to penetrate the low slot area to take away the goaltender’s vision.
More penalty problems in the early 3rd led to a Carolina PP marker by another newly acquired player, Logan Stankoven, and Winnipeg found themselves in a 3-0 hole. The Jets did break the shutout bid with about 3 minutes left when Alex Iafallo popped in his 10th of the season, but when they pulled the goalie to try for more an empty netter sealed the game for the Canes. Winnipeg did get another goal in the final minute, with captain Adam Lowry notching his 14th goal of the year with 52 seconds remaining.

BOJA’s Observations:
- Not a very fun game to watch, as our Winnipeg Jets didn’t appear very determined in the contest. Once they fell behind, the pushback wasn’t there and the boys seemed to be fine with a loss before returning back to Manitoba.
- The stats above are fairly ugly, with only the 2nd forward line of Nikolaj Ehlers, Vladislav Namestnikov, & Cole Perfetti (86.6% xG) and the 1st defensive pairing of Josh Morrissey & Dylan DeMelo (58.8% xG) in the positives.
- The newly formed 4th forward unit was particularly bad against Carolina (2.8% xG), while the bottom defensive pairing didn’t do much better (29% xG).
Well, the Dallas Stars picked up a couple points with a win over the Vancouver Canucks, so the Winnipeg Jets will have to get back to winning when they start an upcoming homestand.
