After locking up the Central Division title, the Winnipeg Jets were right back at it when the Edmonton Oilers visited town on Sunday. The coaching staff opted to rest quite a few players, so lets find out how the short-handed True Northers did….

GAME RECAP

The 1st period was an evenly fought affair as the Jets & Oilers were almost deadlocked in expected goals when the horn blew after 20 minutes of play (0.89-0.84 WPG). Both squads had some decent scoring looks, but the defensive units did well to keep them away from the high danger areas. Cole Perfetti stood out in the opening frame, setting up Nino Niederreiter for two of Winnipeg’s best opportunities, but the teams entered the first intermission with zeroes on the scoreboard.

When the puck dropped to kick off the 2nd, Edmonton quickly opened the scoring when Connor McDavid stole the puck from Alex Iafallo just outside of the Jets’ zone, allowing him to send Connor Brown in all alone on Eric Comrie for a backhand goal. EDM 1-0. The Oilers were controlling the puck in the middle frame, but Winnipeg got a break when they got their first powerplay of the contest. The extra-man helped the Jets control the puck in the offensive zone and that led to a 1 timer from Colin Miller that tested Edmonton’s Stuart Skinner. The True Northers were able to corral the rebound and start another cycle, once again working the puck back to Miller at the point. This time, the defender faked the shot before setting up Mark Scheifele for a 1 timer from the left face-off circle, producing a big rebound for Iafallo to slam home and tie the match. TIE 1-1. That was the high point for our Jets, as they got utterly dominated (18-5 EDM shots) over the rest of the period. A late powerplay chance for the Oilers made the fans at the Canada Life Centre cringe when shutdown defenseman Dylan Samberg took a McDavid 1 timer off his knee, sending him to the ice in pain. To make it worse, PKer Morgan Barron had already broken his stick, so Winning was defending with 2.5 players and that wasn’t enough to stop Edmonton from taking the lead as the PP expired. EDM 2-1.

Winnipeg couldn’t mount a comeback in the final period, once again getting out-shot (11-6) and eventually giving up a 3rd goal against off another neutral zone turnover. EDM 3-1. The Oilers were able to add an empty netter later in the frame and the Jets had to be happy with the knowledge that they had locked up the Presidents’ Trophy due to a Washington Capitals loss.

BOJA’s Observations:

  • Running behind today, so very briefly here….congrats to the Winnipeg Jets for securing their first ever Presidents’ Trophy in franchise history.
  • Eric Comrie played really well, even though he was essentially hung out to dry by his teammates. 35 of 38 shots stopped, a .921 save %, and a +0.53 Goals Saved Above Expected.
  • Perhaps the best news was that coach Scott Arniel stated that he thought the injury to Dylan Samberg was not as severe as it looked and the team is hopeful he will be ready for Round 1 of the playoffs.

A couple days off to rest the bumps & bruises before the Winnipeg Jets cap off the 2024-25 regular season with a game against the Ducks. That one will probably look more like an exhibition game when it comes to the True Northers’ roster, as they will now be focused on getting to the post-season without further injury.
