Well, the nail biting & hand wringing time of the NHL playoffs has finally arrived for the fans of the Winnipeg Jets franchise. With the stark reality of elimination staring the True North club straight in the face, the team will be entering tonight’s contest at the Canada Life Centre with their season on the line.

After all the NHL & franchise records set during the regular season, after earning the President’s Trophy for the league’s best record, after Cole Perfetti’s late game heroics helped the Jets avoid another first round knock out to the St. Louis Blues…..it has come down to Winnipeg needing to pick up three victories in a row against the Dallas Stars to advance to the Western Conference Finals.

There is limited runway remaining and our Jets desperately need to collectively pull up on the controls to get the aircraft off the ground. The coaching staff & players know that this particular plane can do some amazing things once it gets airborne, so it is all about each individual member bringing their skills to bear to accomplish that feat.

As many of us have indicated, there have been three main failures for the Winnipeg Jets this post-season, with the poor play of goalie Connor Hellebuyck, the horrid powerplay success rate, and the frustratingly poor penalty killing units. Order them how you want them, but there is no doubt that these areas are responsible for the True Northers’ lack of success in the playoffs.

So…..are these issues fixable? Sure….but whether that can happen in time to save the Jets season is much less likely. The powerplay is probably the easiest to address, because the squad did have a lot of success early in the year with the extra skater….so going back to basics might be the way to go with this one. The other two are more difficult to solve. The PK’s ability to limit scoring chances has been an issue for years and while the club has had stretches of successful deployment, they aren’t nearly consistent enough to be relied upon. And then we come to Bucky’s mental struggles after Game #82….which clearly don’t have an easy solution or they would have been fixed by now. To make things worse, you can only really see whether whatever the team or player does is working once a year when the playoffs roll around…and that is if your team even qualifies. Then, Hellebuyck typically only gets a small number of games to try & figure things out before the Jets are eliminated and he has to wait another year for his next opportunity. Not the ideal situation for trouble shooting.

Anyways, with limited time to make any real adaptions to those areas of weakness, the Winnipeg Jets will instead have to rely on a complete team game to overcome what is a very good Dallas Stars squad. The Texans have been getting excellent tending from Jake Oettinger, while they have also been getting regular contributions offensively from star forward Mikko Rantanen. The Stars’ special teams have been huge weapons in Dallas’ arsenal and could probably claim responsibility for all three of their wins in the series.

Morning skates have yet to happen, so here is how PuckPedia is suggesting the head coaches may line up their players when the puck drops at 8:30 pm Central:

Time to look at the numbers from the playoffs to date to see how Winnipeg & Dallas compare in the graphic below. In the figures contained in the second section, you will find all the evidence you need to explain why the Jets are trailing in the series. Scoring on a higher percentage of their shots, the Stars are also stopping more of the shots their tender faces, plus their special teams prowess allows them to make Winnipeg pay almost every time the Jets take a penalty (okay, only a third of the time) while also not being concerned at all when Dallas is nailed for an infraction.

The final section also contains some interesting findings, such as how the Stars are actually scoring as much as they create at 5 on 5 (actual & xG ratings are similar). Yet the True Northers are getting 7.5% less goals than they have created in the playoffs, while also having impressive Corsi & Fenwick ratings at even strength to show that they just aren’t finishing.

So basically, the Winnipeg Jets are scoring less than they should while allowing more goals against than expected…which easily explains why the 2024-25 post-season has been such a slog for our club. Yet….the great thing about the NHL playoffs is if you can manage to get to the next round, you get a clean sheet to work with against a brand new opponent.

It is that time again…….so lets hear your thoughts in the Comment section.

Can the White Out crowd at the CLC motivate our boys to a big Game 5 win? I am very much hoping they at least make the Stars work for the series win by forcing a Game 6 or 7. Will coach Scott Arniel stick with the mid-game forward line changes or will he go back his most used combinations? I think he goes with the new combinations. What version of Connor Hellebuyck will we see tonight? While it is obviously important that Winnipeg wins tonight, they really need Bucky to be part of the reason that happens. If they are going to pull off a massive comeback in the series, they will need Hellebuyck to start regaining some of that on-ice confidence. Which Jet player or players will step up in the big moment? Would be great to see Cole Perfetti have another clutch performance, but Winnipeg will really need the stars like Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor, & Nikolaj Ehlers to shine.

Go Winnipeg!!!!!!!!!!!
