The Winnipeg Jets got a little national coverage with the weekly NHL contest on Prime Video against the Toronto Maple Leafs. One team was coming in on a winning streak, the other on a losing streak…so pretty easy to determine who would win, right?
GAME RECAP
I might add to this is in the morning on Tuesday, but for now….
The Winnipeg Jets got totally outplayed in the 1st period, getting outshot and falling behind 2-0. Things continued to get worse in the early 2nd and Winnipeg only showed signs of life after Toronto was already up 4-0. The refs sent the Leafs to the box three straight times and the Jets’ Kyle Connor took advantage to net his 7th and 8th goals of the season.
Toronto had added more of a cushion late in the middle frame, but a Winnipeg goal by Mark Scheifele in a 6 on 5 situation (delayed TOR penalty) made it 5-3 with still over half of the 3rd period left to play. Gabriel Vilardi made it even more interesting when he got a stick on a Connor shot to bring the Jets within one….but that was as close as they could get as an empty netter dashed all hopes of a miraculous comeback.

There are probably observations to be made about the above, but it is too late to try at this time….so feel free to add anything you notice in the comment section below. I may add to the BOJA’s Observation part tomorrow morning with some of the things I pick up after a good night’s sleep.
I think AIH member Skalla provided a precise recap with the following post-game comment:

Lets see if MoneyPuck’s advanced stats for the Winnipeg Jets’ goaltenders, forwards, and defenseman agree with that….

BOJA’s Observations:
- The Winnipeg Jets’ winning streak ends at 8….while they may have made it slightly interesting with a failed comeback, all those flaws we were talking about finally came to roost in the loss against Toronto. Way too many high quality scoring chances against, losing way too many races for loose pucks, not creating enough dangerous chances of their own, the Neal Pionk/Dylan Samberg duo completely falling apart, and a less than stellar goaltending performance…can’t be shocked to walk away with a loss in a game like that.
- Nikolaj Ehlers, Adam Lowry, Dylan DeMelo, Colin Miller, & Logan Stanley finished with an even plus/minus rating in the contest, while Josh Morrissey (3 assists) somehow managed to be +1. The rest of the Jets finished with a negative rating as Toronto owned 5 on 5 play. Kudos to captain Lowry, who somehow wasn’t on the ice for one of the 5 goals against, despite facing a steady diet of the Leafs’ top six.

- Kyle Connor was involved in all 4 of Winnipeg’s goals against Toronto, notching 2 goals and 2 assists for a team-leading 14 points on the season. His shot is in top form early this year and I can’t complain about his effort, just needs to realize that he can do even better by just playing with Mark Scheifele when the Jets are on the powerplay.
- Might add some more of these in the morning when I have more time to pour over the data, but sleep is calling me.
The Winnipeg Jets will continue playing every other day as they head out for a 2 game road trip. The coaching staff better find a way to figure things out over that span, because look what awaits them when they return to the Canada Life Centre.
