Game Recap: Jets @ Blues

The Winnipeg Jets were hoping to start their road trip off well with a strong performance against their division rivals. The St. Louis Blues were coming in on a 2 game winning streak and were hoping home ice advantage could help them end Winnipeg’s recent domination (9-1-0 for the Jets over past 10).

This is how the True North franchise lined up their players for Tuesday’s battle versus the Blues (via PuckPedia)…

GAME RECAP

May be added to tomorrow morning….if you need something now, lets just say that…

Winnipeg wasn’t the best squad in the contest, but it wasn’t hugely lop-sided either. When the Jets broke down defensively, Connor Hellebuyck was there to save the day and great passing by Nikolaj Ehlers & Cole Perfetti helped Winnipeg take a strangle hold on the game in the 2nd period. The Blues made it interesting (for their fans, I guess, just made me bite more of my nails off) by pulling within one in the 3rd, but Mark Scheifele almost regained the 2 goal lead (was totally stoned by Jordan Binnington as seen in photo at the top of the article). Fortunately for us Jets’ fans, solid penalty killing and great goaltending by Bucky helped the Jets extend their winning streak to six.

BOJA’s Observations:

  • Another strong performance in net by Connor Hellebuyck, as the goalie turned aside 27 of 29 shots for a .931 save % and 1.44 Goals Saved Above Expected. What a start to the season…a 5-0 record, 1.40 GAA, and a .948 save %.
  • Cole Perfetti picked up an assist on all 3 of Winnipeg’s goals against St. Louis, giving the young forward 7 points in 6 games (though all his pts came in 2 games). Fetti showed off his hockey knowledge & vision by making key passes to start the Jets’ scoring threats, but his 2nd line still significantly lost the expected goals battle to the Blues.
  • Since I complained about Logan Stanley a lot after his first game of the season, I should be fair and mention that the big defenseman was much more competent against St. Louis. Very impressed with his defensive partner this season, Colin Miller unleashed a 94 MPH one-timer to score the Jets’ 2nd goal of the contest.
  • NHL teams typically ice 12 forwards & 6 defensemen each game, giving them 18 official starting spots for skaters. While I didn’t check the entire NHL to see how rare this is, I noticed that the Winnipeg Jets have gotten points from all 18 spots through 6 games this season. While the franchise does have a couple pointless players in Haydn Fleury (4 gms) & David Gustafsson (1 gm), the skaters sharing those spots have chipped in some offense, Logan Stanley (1 pt in 2 gms) and Rasmus Kupari (1 pt in 5 gms).
  • Winnipeg currently has 6 players scoring at a point per game or better…take some time to enjoy the scoring stats from ESPN.

With the victory on Tuesday night, the Winnipeg Jets are now perfect through six games and sitting with the 2nd best goal differential in the NHL (+17) and the league’s best PP conversion rate (43.8%). I am not sure how long the Jets will keep capitalizing on their chances at such a high rate…but it is still fun to watch. That being said, I am sure coach Scott Arniel will be stressing the importance of limiting high danger opportunities after the past few opponents had more than their share.
