Wojtek Wolski signs for $600k, AIH writer scratches head

33

The Washington Capitals have signed Wojtek Wolski to a one year contract worth $600,000. Wolski is coming off of the worst season of his career in which he scored just 4 goals and 8 assists in 31 games, missing significant time due to a hernia and recurring groin injury. I am in awe of what an incredible deal this is for the Capitals. Wolski is a guy with top 6 talent who, prior to this season, had scored 35 points or more in every season in which he'd played. He has cracked the 45 point level three times and scored 17 or more goals three times in his six year career. At $600k Wolski is an incredibly cheap gamble with 50 point upside. Had the Jets signed Wolski for 50% or even 100% more than the Capitals had paid, I'd have applauded the deal as a decent low risk, high upside gamble. At $600k I am simply left to wonder why the Jets wouldn't attempt to outbid the Capitals for his services. Despite the fact that the Jets currently have 11 forward under contract plus RFAs to re-sign, if it would have cost less than $1 million to get a guy like Wolski in the lineup over Chris Thorburn or Antti Miettinen, I'd have been happy as a clam to pay it.

Tim Stapleton signs with Dynamo Minsk of the KHL

14

According to Rick Ralph of TSN 1290 and the Dynamo Minsk website, Tim Stapleton will be a member of the KHL's Dynamo Minsk this fall. He scored 27 points (11G, 16A) in 63 games with the Jets last year. HC Dinamo Minsk official home page states former #NHLJets Tim Stapleton (current UFA) has agreed in principle to a contract.— Rick Ralph (@RickRalphTSN) July 11, 2012

Jets sign Maxwell (C), Dekanich (G)

39

As per Scott Brown of TNSE, the Winnipeg Jets have re-signed centre Ben Maxwell and signed goaltender Mark Dekanich. Terms of both contracts have yet to be disclosed. Last year as a member of the St. John's IceCaps, Maxwell appeared in 43 games and registered 25 points (8G, 17A). He also suited up for 15 NHL games between the Winnipeg Jets and Anaheim Ducks. Dekanich is a 26 year old goaltender from North Vancouver, BC spent last season with the Springfield Falcons of the AHL -- affiliate to the Columbus Blue Jackets, but due to an ankle injury, only played in 5 regular season games. His last full season was 2010-11 when he started 43 games for the Milwaukee Admirals (NSH), posting a .931 SV% and 2.02 GAA and 23 wins.

Former Jet Brett MacLean Suffers Cardiac Emergency; Currently In Hospital

2

TSN is reporting tonight that former Winnipeg Jet, and current Phoenix Coyote, Brett MacLean suffered a cardiac emergency while playing hockey in Owen Sound on Monday night. MacLean, 23, spent time with the Jets and Coyotes last year, putting up 2 assists in 5 games with the Jets, and 25 goals and 23 helpers with the Coyotes' affiliate San Antonio Rampage. On behalf of the AIH crew, I'd like to wish Brett a speedy recovery and let him know that he is in the thoughts of hockey fans everywhere

Jets Sign Olli Jokinen to Two Year Deal!

+

Olli Jokinen has signed a two year contract with the Winnipeg Jets that will pay him $9 million. For more details, click the link in the title. Opinions are welcome (as always) in the comments. Personally, I like this deal a lot. The price tag could end up being a tad steep (but not terrible) if Jokinen slides back to being a 50 point player but the Jets desperately needed a top 2 center and staying short-term limits the risk.

Personally, I like this deal a lot. The price tag could end up being a tad steep if Jokinen slides back to being a 50 point player but even then won't be too bad. Jokinen's not the greatest player in the world but he was the best UFA center available. The Jets desperately needed a top 2 center and staying short-term limits the risk. Derek Roy would have been nice, but I approve nonetheless. The Jets' roster now stands at 10F, 6D and 1G, not including two-way deals or RFAs yet to re-sign. The forwards will likely be rounded out internally but as the team has just $48.6 million in salary committed to next season, I'm hopeful there will be one more big move coming.
