Defenceman Duncan Keith has retired from pro hockey. Drafted in the second round, 54th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks, Keith scored 646 points (106G, 540A) in 1256 games, as well as 91 points (19G, 72A) in 151 playoff games, for Chicago (2005/06-2020/21) and Edmonton (2021/22). During his career Keith posted career highs of 69 points and 14 goals in 2010, as well as 55 assists in each of 2010 and 2014, all with Chicago. He won the Stanley Cup with Chicago in 2010, 2013, and 2015. He also won the Norris Trophy as the league’s best defenceman in both 2010 and 2014 and the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 2015. He earned Second-Team All-Star honours in 2017 and First-Team All-Star honours in 2010 and 2014, and represented Chicago in the 2008, 2011, 2015 and 2017 All-Star Games. He also won Gold at the 2010 Vancouver and 2014 Sochi Olympics. During his peak as a player he generated strong offence and defended well using his mobility, and had remarkable longevity as a player. After declining performances late in his career, he was traded to Edmonton prior to last season, and was with them as they reached the Western Conference Final. Of course, his legacy will be tarnished by the revelations last season regarding former Blackhawks first-rounder Kyle Beach and his refusal to participate in the investigations, though I strongly doubt that will keep his name from being picked in 2025 when he becomes eligible to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Keith, 38, had one more year remaining on the contract he signed with Chicago that began in 2010, and as a result his retirement will result in the Blackhawks incurring a cap recapture penalty, totaling $5,538,462 for the 2022/23 season and $1,938,456 in 2023/24.
