Goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks has passed away. Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2017 by the Columbus Blue Jackets, Kivlenieks had a 2-2-2 record, 0.899 Save%, 3.09 GAA, and zero shutouts in eight games for Columbus (2019/20-2020/21). He had a career best of one win and zero shutouts in both 2020 and 2021, and a 0.901 Save% and 2.95 GAA in 2021, all with Columbus. While Joonas Korpisalo and countryman Elvis Merzlikins were the primary goalies for the Blue Jackets, Kivlenieks would the first goalie called up usually. He finished his last pro season with a 1-1-0 record, 0.901 Save%, 3.40 GAA, and zero shutouts in two games for Columbus and a 6-2-0 and 0.929 Save% in eight games for AHL Cleveland. Kivlenieks passed away at age 24, and was initially reported by authorities as having slipped and hit his head on a concrete floor while attempting to get out of a hot tub to avoid a firework that had accidentally been fired in the direction of people, but was later confirmed to have died of chest trauma as a result of being struck by a firework.
