Cole’s Notes From Around the League: 6/5/21-6/11/21

Right winger Nick Ritchie has been fined $5000 for elbowing the Islanders’ Scott Mayfield. Head coach Bruce Cassidy has been fined $25000 for criticizing the officiating. No I don’t agree with it, even if it’s the Bruins.

The Flames made no moves this week.

Carolina Hurricanes

Dallas Stars

The Stars signed defenceman Yevgeni Oksentyuk to a three-year entry-level contract.

Detroit Red Wings

The Red Wings loaned goaltender Filip Larsson to the SHL’s HV71.

Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers signed centre Devin Shore has signed a two-year contract. Centre Gaetan Haas has signed a five-year contract in Switzerland with the National League A’s EHC Biel.

Goaltender Viktor Fasth, who last played in the NHL for Edmonton from 2013/14 to 2014/15, has retired from pro hockey. Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2012 by the Anaheim Ducks, Fasth posted a 26-26-7 record, 0.904 Save%, 2.79 GAA, and four shutouts in 63 games for the Anaheim Ducks (2012/13-partway through 2013/14) and Edmonton Oilers (partway through 2013/14-2014/15). Fasth’s NHL career was brief, but for a small part of that time he was the talk of the hockey town, posting career bests of 15-6-2, 0.921 Save%, 2.18 GAA, and four shutouts in the lockout-shortened 2012/13 season, he was considered one of the finest first-year players in the league, only really missing out on the Calder Trophy and All-Rookie honours because he was 31 at the time, and was even considered the no.1 goaltender over Jonas Hiller. Ultimately it didn’t last, with Fasth being traded the following season to Edmonton and leaving the league after spending 2014/15 as a backup. He finished his last NHL season with a 6-15-3 record, 0.888 Save%, 3.41 GAA, and zero shutouts in 26 games for the Oilers. He finished his last season with a 22-9 record and 0.933 Save% for the SHL’s Vaxjo Lakers. Fasth, 38, retired following the 2021 World Championships in what, if I’m understanding the linked article correctly, was a surprising move.
