Centre Andrew Shaw has retired from pro hockey. Drafted in the fifth round, 139th overall, in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks, Shaw has 247 points (116G, 131A) in 544 games, as well as 35 points (16G, 19A) in 72 playoff games, for Chicago (2011/12-2015/16, 2019/20-2020/21) and Montreal (2016/17-2018/19). Despite being what many would consider “undersized” at 5’11”, Shaw stood out for his physical style of play and was a fixture in the bottom nine for the Blackhawks for the bulk of their pseudo-dynasty years. He won Stanley Cups in 2013 and 2015 with the Blackhawks. Though naturally associated with his physical style of play, he was also fairly solid offensively, with career highs of 28 assists and 47 points in 2019 with Montreal, and 20 goals in 2014 with Chicago. Shaw has four points (2G, 2A) in 14 games this season, what will be his last. Shaw, 29, has only played 40 games during these past two seasons combined and has been on injured reserve with a concussion since February 11, and retires with one more year remaining on his contract with a $3.9M cap hit, citing advice from medical professionals to stop playing.
