Manitoba Moose @ Rockford IceHogs Recap - Nov 7th

Moose vs. IceHogs - Bell MTS Place : Bell MTS Place

For their 3rd game in 3 days, the Manitoba Moose (5-3-1) travelled to Rockford to take on the IceHogs (2-5) this Sunday. After opening the road trip with a loss to Milwaukee on Friday, the Moose bounced back with a win over the Central Division leaders (Chicago) yesterday. Manitoba will look to take 2 pts from yet another rival when they face Rockford, who currently find themselves in the basement of the division.

Manitoba got some good news with Mikey Eyssimont returning to the lineup after recovering from his injury. They only have 2 remaining players recovering from injuries - Luke Johnson and Dylan Samberg (currently practicing with the Jets). Arvid Holm will get the start in this one, putting up a 1-0-1 record with a 1.88 GAA and a .923 save % in his first 2 games.

So far, the Moose have managed a minimum of 30 shots in all 9 games played this year, while scoring a total of 26 goals and allowing 22 against for a +4 differential.

Rockford is currently being led in scoring by 3 players with 5 pts (Lukas Reichel, Alex Nylander, & Brett Connolly). The Chicago Blackhawks farm team has struggled to keep the puck out of the net this year, allowing an average of 4 goals against per game.

Lukas Reichel will be facing off against his cousin Kristian Reichel in this game.

The IceHogs have a lot of high draft picks on their roster, including 1st rounders (Nylander - C/LW - 8th overall/2016, Reichel - LW/RW - 17th/2020, Nicolas Beaudin - D - 27th/2018, & Malcolm Subban - G - 24th/2012), 2nd rounders (Chad Krys - D - 45th/2016, Cam Morrison - LW/C - 40th/2016 & Ian Mitchell - D - 57th/2017), and 3rd rounders (Evan Barratt - C/LW - 90th/2017, Alec Regula - D - 67th/2018, & Andrei Altybarmakyan - RW - 70th/2017).

Moose Projected Line Up

1st Period Recap:

  • Both teams found it difficult to get any sustained offensive zone pressure in the opening minutes of the game. They traded shots that were easily handled by the goalies.
  • Vesalainen intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and fed a pass to Suess. He carried it in the zone, tightly turning before trying to hit Poganski with a pass but was unable to connect.
  • 1st line had a rush that ended with a Perfetti slap shot from the top of the circles that was gloved by Rockford's Subban.
  • A failed Nogier clearing led to a bit of pressure for the IceHogs. After a brief cycle, Holm made a butterfly save on a slot snapshot.
  • 4th line caused problems with their forecheck resulting in a couple shots from Eyssimont. The next shift K. Reichel skated behind the net and fed a pass into the slot. Suess was there to 1 time the pass and Subban made a quick glove save to stop the puck from going into the top corner. 2nd line continued to press for the rest of their shifts resulting in a few 1 timers (Suess got his on net, but the others were blocked).
  • 1st line followed up with continued pressure. Oligny's cross-ice pass to a wide open Gustafsson was just deflected by a defender, spoiling the opportunity. The 3rd line kept pushing and cycled the puck eventually setting up a Kovacevic 1 timer.
  • Eyssimont set up Malott on the doorstep, however he couldn't get the puck up & over the goalie's pad.
  • With 10:42 left in the 1st, the Moose are outshooting the IceHogs 7 to 1. Manitoba doing a very good job of clogging up the neutral zone.
  • Heinola took L. Reichel out with a bodycheck on a rush, but the IceHogs regained possession. L. Reichel ended up with the puck behind the net and threw a pass out front. They got a favourable bounce when the pass bounced off Gustafsson in front and popped into the net to give Rockford a 1-0 lead with just under 9 minutes left.
  • IceHogs Goal: L. Reichel (4) from Connolly (4) and Slavin (2)
  • The teams traded chances, with Subban robbing Suess again on a 1 timer and Holm making 2 quick saves on a counter-attack.
  • A Heinola snapshot from the point almost trickled through Subban's legs.
  • Holm made reaction save on a deflected shot, but the rebound bounced right to a Rockford player. Holm sprawled across the net, but Mitchell was able to find the top of the net to give the IceHogs a 2 goal lead with just under 5 minutes remaining.
  • IceHogs Goal: Mitchell (1) from Stanton (1) and Morrison (3)
  • 4th line tried to get Manitoba back into the game with some sustained pressure. Eyssimont & Heinola moved the puck well and they managed a couple shots on net.
  • The Moose continued to press in the final minutes of the period, however they couldn't create a serious scoring chance.
  • Despite dominating the flow of play in the opening frame, Manitoba found itself trailing 2-0 due to a bad bounce & strong goaltending from Subban. They were winning on the shot counter (15-6).
  • Manitoba Shot Leaders: Eyssimont (3), Heinola (2), Maier (2), & Meireles (2)

2nd Period Recap:

  • The opening 2 minutes of the second didn't see either team do much offensively.
  • Shortly after, Gawanke went hard into the end boards when an IceHog player got his stick in the dman's skates. Gawanke was slow to get up, but gave Manitoba it's first PP of the game.
  • The 1st PP unit had to regain the zone after losing the opening draw, but were able to. Perfetti had 4 shots, but only 2 of them reached Subban. After a Heinola point shot was turned aside, Perfetti yet again tested Subban. The penalty ended before the 2nd unit got their chance.
  • Holm called on to make a save on a Rockford 2 on 1. He did well to stay on his feet and took the shot off his chest.
  • A nice dangle by Eyssimont allowed him to gain the zone and fire a pass to Malott near the IceHog net. Subban able to get a stick out and corral the puck before it reached Malott.
  • Minutes ticked by while both teams made it difficult to gain the offensive zones by lining up at the blueline.
  • The IceHogs were able to break out on a long 2 on 1. After a quick pass, Holm was able to stack the pads & come across the net to make a huge save.
  • The Moose raced back the other way and the chance ended when Gustafsson ripped a shot off the crossbar & out of play. Shortly after, Kovacevic took a tripping penalty and sent Rockford to the PP.
  • At the midway point of the 2nd, the Moose were outshooting the IceHogs 20-13.
  • Maier almost netted a SH goal with a wrap-around attempt, but Subban was there to squeeze the post. Rockford eventually able to set up in the Moose zone with a minute gone and had a dangerous chance during a scramble in front. Holm pushed off the post, dislodging it, and the refs felt that he did it on purpose, sending the IceHogs to a 5 on 3 for 53 seconds.
  • The 3 man PK unit did well to keep Rockford to the outside and Holm was only called on to make a save from the point before the Moose got 1 man out of the box. The IceHogs were able to cycle the puck, but couldn't manage to get a shot through to Holm. The Manitoba goalie had to make 1 last pad save before the penalty ended.
  • With 5:55 left, the IceHogs had closed the shot gap and were only trailing 20-16.
  • Kovacevic faked a shot and left the puck for Perfetti. He skated along the blueline and wristed a shot through traffic that clanked off the post.
  • Gawanke had a rough shift, failing to clear the zone on multiple chances.
  • Pretty passing play between Perfetti, Gustafsson, & Malott led to a good chance from in close. They continued to push for the rest of their shift without success.
  • 4th line followed up with more pressure, pinning the IceHogs in their own end. Vesalainen made a nice move and pass to set up Maier, but he couldn't raise the puck over Subban's pad.
  • After Manitoba continued to push, Rockford sprung L. Reichel on a breakaway. He made a quick move to the backhand and roofed the puck into the top corner to extend the IceHog lead to 3-0 with 58 seconds to play.
  • IceHogs Goal: L. Reichel (5) from Slavin (3)
  • The 2nd period was a lot more even in terms of puck control & chances. The Moose have to feel frustrated about being behind in a game they have had the better of the play, but you can't press too much or you give up high danger chances that will kill any chance at a comeback. Shots were 25 for Manitoba and 17 for Rockford.
  • Manitoba Shot Leaders: Perfetti (4), Eyssimont (3), Maier (3), Malott (3), & Meireles (3)

3rd Period Recap:

  • Malott jumped up to take Poganski's spot on the 1st line to open the 3rd period.
  • Another period opened with neither team finding a way to create a scoring chance.
  • Perfetti fed a backhand float pass through the opposing dmen and Malott was there to shovel his 1st goal of the season home. Rockford 3 Manitoba 1 just 3.5 minutes into the 3rd.
  • Moose Goal: Malott (1) from Perfetti (3) and Suess (1)
  • Poganski made Subban kick out a pad to make a save after racing down the right wing to get a chance.
  • L. Reichel burst through the neutral zone, undressed Chisholm and was in all alone on Holm. He faked forehand, then shifted to the backhand to tuck it by the Moose tender to restore the 3 goal lead for Rockford.
  • IceHogs Goal: L. Reichel (6) from Beaudin (4)
  • The IceHogs iced the puck 6 minutes into the period, resulting in an offensive zone face-off for the Moose. A big face-off win for Perfetti allowed Gustafsson to poke the puck back to the point. Kovacevic whipped it along the blueline to Heinola and he blasted a 1 timer. Subban struggled to see the puck with Perfetti & Gustafsson screening and the puck found a way between the goalie's legs. Moose make the game 4-2.
  • Moose Goal: Heinola (2) from Kovacevic (3) and Gustafsson (6)
  • A turnover in the d-zone led to Holm having to make a couple saves, one on a wide open IceHog in the low slot.
  • Just as we reached the midway point of the 3rd, the 1st line put on a lot of pressure trying to bring Manitoba within 1. Shots were 28-20 for the Moose at that point.
  • Gustafsson got a penalty during an after-whistle scrum gave Rockford a chance to extend their lead on the PP.
  • The Moose had no difficulties killing off Gustafsson's penalty, even getting a SH chance for Heinola that Subban was able to kick into the corner. The IceHogs helped them with the kill by taking a penalty with 30 seconds remaining, giving the teams a brief 4 on 4 opportunity.
  • Suess fed Vesalainen for a 1 timer that Subban initially bobbled, but he was able to cover up before Suess arrived. That was the only chance for either team at 4 on 4.
  • Manitoba did keep the puck in the offensive zone for their brief PP, but really couldn't test Subban before the teams were back to even strength.
  • With 6 minutes remaining, the Moose surpass the 30 shot mark again (31-21). They continue to push, Heinola skated into the slot & had a shot blocked.
  • 4th line spent a shift in the Rockford zone and caused a scrum after they tried to bang a rebound by the goalie. 2nd line continued the domination of possession and Manitoba pulled Holm with just over 2 minutes remaining. They had a few chances, but most were blocked by the defenders.
  • Eyssimont broke up a stretch pass as the IceHogs attempted to seal the game with an empty netter.
  • The 1st line plus the extra attacker struggled to gain the zone for a minute before they were able to set up Heinola for a 1 timer that Subban was able to smother.
  • The 2nd line won a face-off with a minute left and gave a final push for a goal. After cycling around for a bit, they set up another 1 timer for Heinola at the point. He was able to get the puck through to the net with Polei screening in front. He deflected it up and over Subban's shoulder to bring the Moose within 1 goal, but only 20 seconds left in the period.
  • Moose Goal: Polei (1) from Heinola (5) and Poganski (3)
  • After Rockford iced the puck, Manitoba had one last chance with 15 seconds left. Gustafsson was able to pull the draw back to the point and Heinola rocketed a 1 timer towards the net. Subban stretched and was just able to get a toe on the puck to kick it out.
  • Manitoba Shot Leaders: Heinola (6), Eyssimont (5), Perfetti (4), & Malott (4)
  • Final Score: Rockford 4 Manitoba 3
  • Shots: Manitoba 37 Rockford 21

Final Thoughts:

  • Manitoba comes up just short with their comeback effort. They dominated the 1st & 3rd periods and sent plenty of rubber towards Subban.
  • A 10 straight game with at least 30 shots on net.
  • An impressive hat-trick for Rockford's Lucas Reichel, showing nice hands when he was in all alone on Holm.
  • A bad statistical game for Holm, but a weird bounce on the 1st goal and a couple breakaway goals led to 4 goals against. He did make a few big-time saves to keep Manitoba close enough to attempt a comeback.
  • After 2 games without a shot on net, Gustafsson managed to get 1 this game. Manitoba also rang 3 posts throughout the game.
  • 3 Stars of the Game:
      • 1st: L. Reichel - Rockford
      • 2nd: Slavin - Rockford
      • 3rd: Mitchell - Rockford
  • The Moose manage to pick up 3 pts in the 3 road games they had this weekend, oddly beating the division's top team (Chicago) and losing to teams (Milwaukee/Rockford) that were sitting in the cellar when they faced Manitoba.
  • Up Next: Manitoba Moose @ Milwaukee Admirals on Wednesday, Nov 10th .
