Right winger Ryan Callahan has retired from pro hockey. Drafted in the fourth round, 127th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Rangers, Callahan has 386 points (186G, 200A) in 757 games, as well as 39 points (20G, 19A) in 121 playoff games, for the Rangers (2006/07-partway through 2013/14) and Tampa Bay (partway through 2013/14-2018/19). Callahan was named captain of the Rangers for the 2011/12 season, succeeding Chris Drury, and was succeeded by Ryan McDonagh, who wore the “C” from the 2014/15 season until partway through 2017/18, when he joined Callahan in Tampa Bay. Callahan has career highs of 54 points, in 2012 with the Rangers and 2015 with Tampa Bay, 29 goals in 2012 with the Rangers, and 30 assists in 2015 with Tampa Bay. The late 2010s were unkind to Callahan, as he fell from 54 points to 28 points in 2016, and played 137 of the 246 games between the 2017 and 2019 seasons, including only 18 games in 2017, due to various injuries. On long-term injured reserve due to a degenerative back condition, Callahan was traded to Ottawa, in a move mirroring the Lightning’s recent acquisition of Marian Gaborik, ahead of the 2019/20 season. Callahan finished his final NHL season in 17 points (7G, 10A) in 52 games for Tampa Bay in 2018/19 and didn’t play in 2019/20. Callahan, 35, retired due to the back condition.
