For Connor Hellebuyck, it’s been a tumultuous ride in Winnipeg as the leading man in net. At long last, the struggles and victories have led him to the highest point in his career thus far; a finalist for the Vezina trophy. This award is supposedly presented to the best goalie in the league, but we know that often doesn’t happen as anticipated. Hellebuyck is the rare exception. He was genuinely the league’s best goalie this year, and other finalists Tuukka Rask and Andrei Vasilveskiy weren’t on the same level. As a Jets fan, this is an amazing moment, one I don’t think any of us would have expected at the start of the season. We’ve never had a goalie nominated for a Vezina before, much less a trophy favorite. Enjoy this moment, folks, because it’s a rarity.
