Left winger Alexander Steen has retired from pro hockey. Drafted in the first round, 24th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, Steen has 622 points (245G, 377A) in 1018 games, as well as 36 points (15G, 21A) in 91 playoff games, with Toronto (2005/06-partway through 2008/09) and St. Louis (partway through 2008/09-2019/20). Steen, a natural centre, spent the most notable seasons of his career as a winger but fit solidly into the mold of a two-way forward, relied on in a defensive role but with some offensive chops that showed themselves relatively late in his career. with four of his 50+ point seasons and both of his 60+ point seasons coming between the 2014 and 2018 seasons. Steen scored career highs of 64 points in 2015, 33 goals and 40 assists, both in 2015, all with St. Louis. He won the Stanley Cup with St. Louis in 2019. Steen finished his final NHL season with 17 points (7G, 10A) in 55 games with the Blues. Steen, 36, was forced into retirement due to a degenerative back condition after seeing both his points and games played decline in the past few seasons.
