Goaltender Jonas Gustavsson, who last played in the NHL for Edmonton in 2016/17, has retired from pro hockey. Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2009 by the Toronto Maple Leafs, Gustavsson has a 72-67-23 record, 0.901 Save%, 2.88 GAA, and seven shutouts in 179 games, as well as a 0-2 record, 0.917 Save%, 2.71 GAA, and zero shutouts in two playoff games, for Toronto (2009/10-2011/12), Detroit (2012/13-2014/15), Boston (2015/16), and Edmonton (2016/17). Nicknamed “the Monster” during his career in Sweden, he was signed after the fourth year of Toronto’s post-lockout playoff drought in the hopes that his level of play would carry over to the NHL. Between that not panning out and the sort-of ascent of James Reimer, he wound up peaking as a backup, and not a good one either. Gustavsson has career-bests of 17 wins and four shutouts in 2012 with Toronto and a 0.911 Save% and 2.56 GAA in 2015 with Detroit. He finished his last NHL season with a 1-3-1 record, 0.878 Save%, 3.10 GAA, and zero shutouts in seven games with Edmonton as well as 8-9-1 record and 0.917 Save% in 20 games with AHL Bakersfield. Gustavsson, 36, finished his final pro season with 14-17 record and 0.917 Save% in 32 games in the SHL’s Linkopings IF.
