Should the Jets trade for Mackenzie Weeger?

The Winnipeg Jets appear to be doing what smart teams would do and are listening to offers on all their young forwards in hopes of improving their defence. This was my main complaint when the Patrik Laine and Nikolaj Ehlers rumours started: they should also have Kyle Connor in play. They now appear to have him available for the right price.

This is what a smart team will do: they will listen to offers on any player. That does not mean that they are shopping those players, just that they will listen to your offers and consider ones that are good.

Mackenzie Weeger is interesting because he appears to be a genuinely good true-blue defensive defenceman. As someone who does not watch the Florida Panthers play unless I have to, I do not know if he lacks general puck-moving ability or just does not need it in Florida, but Weeger is an actual good player from the looks of it.

As you can see, Weeger is damn good especially after the three games he played as a rookie. The only issue is that the Jets need to make sure he can move the puck even though he is not a big points producer because they do not necessarily have the best puck movers on defence themselves. But Weeger would be an improvement for the Jets period.

The Jets are also listening to offers for Kyle Connor which is all that some of us asked of them. It is not certain they will trade any of Connor, Laine, or Ehlers, but having it known that they are listening to offers is good. As for Weeger, he is also good.
