The Winnipeg Jets made a number of notable moves today, assigning new numbers to camp standouts Ville Heinola (switching to 14) and David Gustafsson (switching to 19). For those of us who were quite fond of their performances, it’s a positive sign for both to stick around. Heinola was especially good, and for a blueline desperately in need of a significant boost, he couldn’t arrive soon enough.

Ville Heinola - 14
David Gustafsson - 19
Per Ken Wiebe from the Athletic, Winnipeg also assigned several players to the Moose, including Eric Comrie, Nelson Nogier, JC Lipon, Joona Luoto, and CJ Suess:
#NHLJets reassign five players: G Eric Comrie, D Nelson Nogier and F JC Lipton on waivers with purpose of sending them to #MBMoose while CJ Suess and Joona Luoto were assigned directly to #AHL

Of that crop, I’m most surprised to see Luoto fail to make the cut. He was fairly impressive for a depth forward, and showed some deft distribution at times. Luoto just turned 22 so he’ll have plenty of time to hone his game with the Moose. Should injuries arise (and they always do), I wouldn’t be shocked to see him on one of the first call-up lists.
