Defenceman Dan Girardi has retired from pro hockey. Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2006 by the New York Rangers, Giradi has 264 points (56G, 208A) in 927 games, as well as 36 points (8G, 28A) in 143 playoff games, for the Rangers (2006/07-2016/17) and Tampa Bay (2017/18-2018/19). Spending much of his career as a relied-on leader, regular 20- to 30-point scorer, and frequent shot-blocker, Girardi averaged at least 20 minutes per night each season from 2007/08 to 2015/16 and represented the New York Rangers in the 2012 NHL All-Star Game. Though he wasn’t great as a play driver, he was serviceable for what he was as a player. Girardi has career highs of 31 points and 27 assists in 2011 and 10 goals in 2008, all with the Rangers. He finished his last season with 16 points (4G, 12A) in 62 games for Tampa Bay. Girardi, 35, retires as the league’s all-time shot blocking leader, with 1954 blocks since the NHL began tracking that stat in 2005.
