Blake Wheeler Clears the Air

TSN just posted a nine minute interview between Sara Orlesky and Winnipeg Jets captain Blake Wheeler. Jets fans need to watch this and read the accompanying article on TSN.

I won’t go into too much detail as you really need to watch it and read the article. However, here are a few thoughts.

First, well done Sara Orlesky! She managed to walk that fine line between leveraging the respect and positive relationships she has with the Jets players, and asking some pointed questions about Blake Wheeler’s intensity level, whether he feels he was too hard on some of the players, and whether the rumours of dressing room issues have any merit.

Second, well done Winnipeg Jets management for agreeing to this type of interview for their team captain. By doing so they are at least acknowledging that perhaps there was a tiny fire to justify the smoke that was emanating from the dressing room last season.

Lastly, very impressive move by Blake Wheeler. He has earned my respect, and hopefully the respect of his teammates by sitting down for nine minutes, answering some tough questions, showing some vulnerability and that he has reflected on his role as a captain and as a person. That is leadership. Not many professional athletes would do so. I cannot think of one off the top of my head.
