The Winnipeg Jets’ 7th round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft had his first pro season in 2018-19.

The 21-year-old regularly found himself on the injured list, as he managed to appear in just 47 games on the season, posting 16 points as he mostly played on the Manitoba Moose’s third and fourth lines.

McKenzie’s quest for playing time will not prove to be any easier this season, with veteran returnees such as Seth Griffith, Logan Shaw and J.C. Lipon, and newcomers including Gabriel Bourque, Andrei Chibisov and Joona Luoto, just to name a few. That doesn’t include the likes of Kristian Vesalainen and Mason Appleton, who are not locks to crack the Jets’ roster.

McKenzie is entering the second of three years on his entry-level contract, and will be expected to take a step forward in his development. If he can stay healthy, McKenzie demonstrated that he can rack up points when he played for the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks, and will hope to translate that to the pro game.
