Preview: Winnipeg Jets vs Anaheim Ducks

Introduction:

The Jets followed up an impressive victory against the Calgary Flames last weekend with a 3 -2 win against the Los Angeles Kings Monday night in Tinsel Town. Tyler Myers was the hero scoring the winning goal late in the game on a nice end-to-end rush using Patrik Laine as a decoy. Matt Hendricks was a surprise addition to the line up with Jack Roslovic as a healthy scratch. We all knew Paul Maurice would get him into a game or two before the playoffs. There will be a game in the playoffs when Matt Hendricks will be called upon. He will step in, throw a few body checks, chirp the other team, and give some of the younger Jets some confidence. That’s why we got him.

Anaheim Ducks have had a minor resurgence lately winning their last two games first at Colorado, and then at home against Florida. It’s too little, too late however, as they are essentially out of the playoff race thanks to a stretch where they lost 19 out of 21 games, which cost old pal Randy Carlyle his coaching job. I’m always a little nervous when the Jets play at the Honda Center thinking back to the playoff series between these two teams in 2015. Many of the stars in that series for the Ducks, like Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, Rickard Rakell, are still around, but, not playing at their 2015 level.

Who Is Hot: Blake Wheeler is quietly having a career year. We are lucky to have him Jet fans. Who Is Hot: John Gibson continues to play at an elite level despite the overall play of the Ducks.
Who is Not: I believe in Nikolaj Ehlers. I also believe he should be putting up better offensive numbers. Who Is Not: Bob Murray has managed to go .500 since taking over as coach. I suppose that could be viewed as a positive thing for the Ducks this season, but, he is not exactly crushing it as coach.
Keep an Eye On: The Jets team defense. Laurent Brossoit only had to make 15 saves against LA. Keep an Eye On: Whether the Ducks continue this mini upswing, or realize that perhaps it is time to think about the Jack Hughes sweepstakes.
