It’s really hard to establish yourself as a professional hockey player while you’re sitting in the press box. This is something Simon Bourque learned the hard way with the Laval Rocket last year in the AHL.

Another year older, wiser and experienced will help Bourque, as will a change of scenery and teammates. The quality of defenders on the Manitoba Moose this year looks to be decent, with Sami Niku, Tucker Poolman (probably), Nelson Nogier, Logan Stanley and Peter Stoykewych among the names headed to Moose pasture.

Bourque is on the second year of a three-year contract, and has an opportunity to show he can make the transition to the pro game a successful one this year. With better teammates, and (possibly) consistent playing time, Bourque might become the best piece in the trade the Jets made to acquire him this summer. I mean…I doubt it. But it’s possible.
