Right winger Brian Gionta has retired from pro hockey. Drafted in the third round, 82nd overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils, Gionta has 595 points (291G, 304A) in 1026 games, as well as 68 points (32G, 36A) in 113 playoff games, for New Jersey (2001/02-2008/09), Montreal (2009/10-2013/14), Buffalo (2014/15-2016/17), and Boston (2017/18). Gionta was the captain of the Canadiens from 2010/11 to 2013/14, and captained the Sabres during his entire stint with them. Gionta has career-highs of 41 goals, 41 assists, and 89 points, all in 2006 with New Jersey. Despite never getting anywhere near that, he never stopped being productive, topping 30 points in each of his three seasons with the Sabres. Gionta won the Stanley Cup in 2003 with the New Jersey Devils. For his last pro season, Gionta spent the year on a practice contract with the AHL’s Rochester Americans to stay in game shape and train in preparation for the Pyeongchang Olympics. He would play one game for Rochester on a PTO before captaining Team USA at the Olympics. Gionta, who had turned down NHL offers during the year in order to play in the Olympics, joined Boston just ahead of the trade deadline and scored seven points (2G, 5A) in 20 games. Gionta, 39, made the decision to officially retire after being seen earlier coaching prospects at the Sabres’ development camp.
