This is a smart move for Morrissey and the Jets. After this season they will be able to better project how their cap space will shake out over the next few seasons. Nikolaj Ehlers’ new contract starts this year and Blake Wheeler’s the year after. Patrik Laine will also have a new contract following this season.
This contract is very close to the one signed by Jacob Trouba a couple years ago. Like Trouba, Morrissey will be able to prove his value to the team and hopefully get a fair value contract after this deal.
For their part, the Jets get a very good player at a very reasonable cap hit for two years and buy more time to figure out their salary cap long-term.
