The offensive game of Josh Morrissey continues to develop, to go along with the terrific defence he has provided the Winnipeg Jets.

He doesn’t shoot a ton, not that he’s expected to, but his ability to skate with and distribute the puck has certainly been gaining positive attention. Morrissey has seen time on the Jets’ top power play unit this year, and is firmly cemented as the team’s top pairing left handed defenceman from now until he stops being a Jet.

Despite regularly going up against the best the opposition can throw at the Jets, Morrissey’s advanced stats trend in the Jets’ favour. He and his partner, Jacob Trouba, don’t exactly shoot a ton either, which doesn’t help. They do lead the Jets in blocked shots, which in theory helps the Corsi For for the other team but actually helps the Jets because those shots didn’t get through.

Morrissey is 23-years-old, and signed a 2-year contract worth $3.15 million per season this summer, and will still be a restricted-free agent when that contract expires in 2020.

It would be ideal to lock Morrissey up long term, as I’m sure the Jets want to do. The same thing goes for his partner, as the duo could reasonably form the Jets’ top pairing for a decade. How that shakes out in the future remains to be seen, but if and when his game continues to improve, it could cost a buck or two.

But he’s worth it.
